Hi, the only record around the period you indicated on Roots Ireland

http://www.rootsireland.ie/

that I could find was as follows

Church Baptism Huston William 1778 Co. Mayo

Point to note in this time period some of the birth records etc are recorded in Latin and as such that Latin names do not show as a result if you're using the anglicized names. You need to put forename and surname in in latin to find the records. If the records are there.

Hi Billy,

Thank you for your information. It could be my GGG grandfather and it gives me another point of reference. I am sure that he and the next two generations after him lived in and around Ballymena, and went to the two local Church of Ireland Churches. I  know that there are several variations on the Houston name and so far have not found any of the ones that I have investigated to have the alternative spelling that you suggest but, there is always a first time. Interestingly enought I am looking into four four family names, paternal and maternal mothers and fathers and my maternal grandmother was a Wallace and the family lived in the Portstewart Coleraine area. Her  family had a hotel in Portstewart. I guess that we are all truly related.

thanks again

It is a very small world, my grandmother Wallace's (maiden surname Moore) family came from Ballymena and surrounding area. I must admit I haven't delved too deeply into my Irish side as I'm still tracing them in Scotland, they moved around a fair bit here. Also tracking the Irish records is heck of expensive as well.

Another tip about Ireland is a lot of the villages seem to straddle county borders, so although you know they lived in X village and X county a birth or marriage may appear in X village but Y county (basically cross the street and you're in another county record).

I've got the Moore family arriving in Port Glasgow, then some of them move to Partick in Glasgow and them some of them appear in Fife (around the Kirkcaldy area). Why they moved so much I have yet to find out.

All the best
That's a great tip about villages straddling borders. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

The same person that I am looking for!

There seem to be a lot of men called William Houston - it was obviously a popular name at that time. McLammont or McAmont or McLammon on the other hand seems to be very rare but just as hard to locate.
