During the weekend of April 21-23 we will have the second annual Clean-A-Thon.  We will be working on cleaning up WikiTree.  You can work on a specific family, state, type of "suggestion," or whatever you can think up.  We are grouped in teams for support and to cheer each other on.  If you'd like to get your feet wet and learn how to participate in challenges, this is the perfect time and the perfect team.  To join up, just follow this link and say you desperately want to be a Merry Mopper!

Hi! Sometimes talking to ourselves is the best company.

Any idea what our group challenges are going to be?
They'll be whatever we want them to be.  We have no area or expertize per se, but I can make up stuff for you guys to do.  You can work on whatever you like.
How do I  know how many I have done?
So sorry I've turned out to be such a lame teammate. This weekend has turned out way busier than I planned. But every contribution helps, right?
RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had high hopes for the weekend.  Then the internet hosted by Verizon in my area went down - an area wide outage.  It just came back up and now I have to go to work.  I am so angry and disappointed that I could chew nails.
Life happens, Mary.
Life beyond our control happens.  Get a stick of celery and save your teeth.
wikitree has two or three big thons a year and you can always just make
any corrections you have time and inclination any time.  Maybe the monthly
sourcerers challenge, or just the Saturday sprints would interest you  .We'll
be glad of any help you bring to the team this weekend or in the future if  you take advantage of another thon in the future.

Hmmm.  This is getting awfully close to talking to myself.

Lucy,  I sent you a message by private messages: re  Mary??  Did you get it?
I gotta start checking my emails...
Well, my mom's reply to comments about her talking to herself was that it was nice to talk to someone intelligent once in a while :).

Don't exactly know how this chat site is supposed to work.  This is my first time doing a clean-a-thon.
who you talking to Lucy?
This is my first time. Have only been  around a couple of months, but ready to work hard.
Glad to have you with us.  Find some of the very easily made changes like
use of USA before 1776, or punctuation mistakes like commas instead of
periods, and viceversa, separating names, etc.  to break in to correcting mistakes.  Perhaps
the most important thing for everyone to remember is to be careful to not
remove information unless you have sources for the changes and then to explain what you did on the changes line, and sometimes even in the biography which gives you more room to explain your changes.  This seems to be the biggest complaint I read about corrections made to the
profiles by thons.  Have fun and don't worry about having huge numbers of corrections.  QUALITY outperforms quantity any day.  That is a feature
this team enjoys (with some of the others) to allow us to work as much or
as little as we have time and inclination as we have.  Hope you win a tee-
shirt, like I did on the sourceathon.  You can't win if you are not participating.
My mom's attitude too.  Are we sisters? "grin"
My husband's out of the country, so I just have he dogs to talk to.  They watch me intently, but I am careful not to say the magic words:

Wanna eat?

Hungry?

Chicken.

Bacon.

Cheese.

Food.

Ditto about being careful with magic words in front of the dogs. My beagle would tell you that the words missing from your list are:

  • Out.
  • Walk.
  • Ride.

Right now she is lying on my foot (no sneaking away from her!) and snoring like an exhausted stevedore.

My dogs have doggie doors.  And they don't get to go in the car very often.  They are so happy that the weather is finally turning, except Amy.  She is an inside dog.

Did I tell you that my husband is out of the country?  Well, he is, and he is getting another puppy.  This one is a male.  His job is to straighten out his big sisters. They are all bulldogs.  I think its a good idea.  Two of our dogs are 6 years old, and one just turned 1 year old.
Another puppy? Wow! I've had dogs throughout my life, but haven't had a puppy in decades. I always rescue older dogs because they have a harder time finding a home. My current sweetheart was 10 years old when we met, 13 now. I figured we two old broads could hang out together. <wink> But adopting older dogs is not for everyone. They come with their own unique issues. On the other hand, I don't remember how to raise/train a puppy. Have fun with the new member of the family.

Do you ever include any pets in the family stories that you hand down with your genealogy? I have pictures of my dad with his three favorite dogs. In the first one he was only about 9 years old in 1930, one after WW2 in France, and one I gave him in 1971. I have their names and stories because he talked about them so often.

Well kids, it looks like we are going to be a tiny team as usual, right Beulah?  I'm kind of a new member like everyone else.  I do a lot of jumping around, working on different projects and stuff.  I am proud to say I am the Project Coordinator for the African-American Project, so I do a lot of work there.  I've been told that we are going to expand the project shortly and I am very excited about that!

The good thing about this team is that we can work on whatever we are comfortable with.  I like to do major clean-ups after merges.  They can take a long time.  Some errors are fast and easy, like a misspelling in birth location.  That can be a simply copy/paste operations, but it can get boring.  If you need any advice, just ask.  I'm a Data Doctor and try to stay up on all the rules.

I'm not out to set record numbers in improvements, only improvements in
records.  I've been working, over two years, to add sources to an orphaned family GEDCOM and have sourced close to 4000 profiles in it for future
generations.  This is the same thing, trying to pass on accurate profiles
for the future.  Everyone: have fun, don't stress over things, leave any
thing you don't understand alone, (I do a lot of that), and good luck wishes for everyone that the only record we set is the number of members who win prizes during participation!!!!

I stumbled across something while changing the fields that list USA/United States prior to 1776. In Pennsylvania (my state) the counties changed a lot over the years. So I am also trying to correct the county names. I just changed a town's county that changed six times(!!!) by 1783. You really have to pay attention to when the event occurred and, as Beulah suggested, add notes to the Biography. If anyone else has that issue in their state, this website is invaluable: https://www.mapofus.org

I noticed the same thing.  I'm going to post a list next to my computer for the future.  We are getting so smart!
I want a map like this for Germany!!!! Keeping track of the changes from the Holy Roman Empire through the changes between French and German Counts/Dukes and then the various wars, makes my head spin.
