Rules for comment notes/citations for === Research Notes ===

I'f I add a <ref> xyz </ref> I'll get a footnote for xyz.  What if you are making multiple research notes and you want to be able to link to different parts of the research notes text?

While the above xyz citation above appears in sources as:

1. xyz

Is there any way to do the same for research notes wherein, next to the text, instead of a [1] there is some other annotation, like [i.] or [a] and down in the bottom, in the research notes, we find:

a. In this example blah blah

b. And in this example blah blah

If there is no mechanism for making links like this, in what format should I make my research note footnote annotations?

i., ii., iii., or

a., b., c., or

+., ++., +++

some other format?

thanks in advance for your replies.

I have never felt the need to have footnotes linking to sections of the research notes, but perhaps that's because I have never had more than a few items that I treat in the notes.  The way I do it is that, in the biography, if I'm making a statement about ambiguity in a person's birth date then I'll write (see Notes) at the end of the statement.  In the Notes section, I use bold text to identify each section, for example:

'''Birth Date'''<br />
So-and-so's birth date is stated differently in different records:
* about 1900 in the 1920 census<ref name="census1920" />
* February 2, 1902 in the Social Security Death Index<ref name="ssdi" />

I don’t think so.  I am pretty sure there is only one reference level and the same citation will appear at each location of the <reference/> command.

thanks, any opinion as to the style for making manual entries?
I'd just do something like

== Biography ==

Blah blah blah. (Note 1)   Blah blah more blah. (Note 2)  Blah ...

...

____

      (1) text of note 1

      (2) text of note 2

Or if there aren't many footnotes, there's the traditional asterisk and dagger.

It's easy enough to make clickable jumps from the text to the footnote and back, but it adds clutter and isn't worth it unless the bio is long.
I like this but the problem I see is that some folks will go down to look for a citation and will see.

1.  xyz

2. xyz

and mistake the research notes for citations.

I'd prefer to use a, b, c, or i, ii, iii, or something that is different than numerals.

I was inquiring if there was a set rule - if not, I think I might just go with Roman numerals or [Note A]

A. text of first noe

B. text of second note

or same but with [Note i]

On second thought, that just looks a bit busy, why not just[a]

a. first note

b. second note

or[i]

i. first note

ii. second note

Just start your info on the next line after the ref tag

For example the number starts here<ref>

#
#
#

:#
:#

:i
:ii
:iii
</ref>

?  - I'm not following you.
Your objective is to give examples in your references that are named different than just (1). As Kitty replied, this is the system, you cannot change it, so settle for an alternative the closest to your request.

It could look like this

(1)
  i.

  ii.
My objective is to give footnotes that redirect or refer to the research notes.

I don't understand your example.
Use <ref name="name">xyz</ref> and <ref name="name"/> where you would like the reference to appear again
it will end up in the sources - not what I'm trying to do
I'm sure if you experiment a little you will find a method that will suit you.

Look at your headings.

==Biography==

===Research Notes===

will give 1 and 1.1
by Ros Haywood G2G Astronaut (1.9m points)
Sorry, I don't understand what you mean.
==Biography== (two equals signs either side)

===Research Notes=== (three equals signs either side)

====Point 1==== (four equals signs either side)

Try it out on a profile and see what happens.  Do you like the look of the 'Table of Contents'?

extra equals signs = more indentation?

"will give 1 and 1.1"

absolutely no idea what this means

Then my suggestion would be to try it out so you can see. :)

You can always delete it again if you don't like it.
Was scratching my head on that one - I just figured out that I need to delete the comments (three equals sings either side)

Ah, now I see it.  That actually looks quite nice and works quite well.  I think I'll go with that and change Point 1 to Note A & Note B.

thanks
Yup, I get it - looks great.  In this case, the Note A and B are a little too pronounced (and bold) so I settled on:

== Research Notes ==

:Note A

::A direct link has not (yet) been found...

I appreciate the formatting lesson - slowly on I think I'm learning the Wiki format code language ;-)

I found a nice way to link to and from the == Research Notes ==

I made a writeup of it here:

Thank you SJ.  Another tool for my work box on Profile creation and style.

Thank You!!!
