Robert III Beauchamp or Robert IV Beauchamp?

There's a rather old pending merge between Beauchamp-71 Robert III Beauchamp and Valletort-27 Robert IV Beauchamp.  Yes, they are the same person; Robert's father Simon Valletort married a Beauchamp heiress.

So do we use Robert III or Robert IV?  One rather old source -- cited at http://www.weavo.co.uk/hatch/ -- uses Robert IV.  However, Robert III is used in Weis's more recent "Ancestral Roots" and the following Beauchamp pedigree: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GEN-MEDIEVAL/1999-01/0916907523

It seems that according to the more recent numbering, the very first Robert doesn't get a "I" because he didn't use the surname Beauchamp.

If you look closely at the Gen-medieval link you have provided it is Robert IV in that genealogy who matches the wiki profile named Robert III. Although not all the sources used are named in full, they do seem to be reputable ones. I don't have anymore information but based on the above I would suggest that until more information is found you use Robert IV.  Though someone may have access to the Weis' book and perhaps that has other sources?

Hah, you're right, that pedigree uses Roman numerals both to mark the generations and to count the Roberts.  Thanks for your reply; that works for me, and I'll run it by the managers of the two profiles.
