My great grandfather William Lightbody Nicholson, born 1843 in Co. Durham England. He emigrated to USA 1871 leaving behind his wife and two daughters. I have been trying for few year now but cannot find out any information of his whereabouts in the USA.

It will be helpful if you create profiles with all the known information and sources for William and his known immediate family as clues can lie in related information - for example:

1. You indicate he emigrated to the U.S. in 1871 so presumably you have a source for that info - perhaps on arrival in the U.S. he lodged with others that he had made the crossing with or lived near friends he made during the voyage. This is particularly true if some of his shipmates came from the same area in England and emigrated together.

2. Did he have a skilled trade or profession (and did his father)? That can help identify the right person if it is an uncommon trade (almost anything except farmer and labourer/yeoman is potentially helpful).

3. Have you looked in Canada? Many emigrants made their way to Canada through U.S. ports or disembarked during stop-overs.

4. Did any of the family left behind in England ever rejoin William in America?
