Categories for Swedish aristocracy

I would like to add categories for the Swedish aristocracy, such as Duke of Södermanland, wars the kings and noblemen were involved in and also created categories in Swedish for these. Is this ok? I understand that some profiles may get a lot of categories this way but would it not be intersting to be able to see who the dukes were of a province just like we like to see who the kings were of a country?

yes Great idea!

Sounds like a good idea though there are some categories already for military history you might like to look at-

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Swedish_Military_History

And the aristocracy should go under the Swedish Nobility major category (I think)

To follow through on John's comment, it should be noted that the 'Nobility' categories we have are designed to include royals, nobles and aristocrats.  In an effort to keep the category name 'short and sweet', we named it Nobility.  They are broken down by country.  Within the Swedish Nobility category, you can have sub-categories for Kings, Dukes, etc.  You need to know how to set it up, and I will help you.  See my answer (as opposed to comment) to this question and email me.  I'm really thrilled with your enthusiasm!

If you are going to differentiate Swedish (and Finnish) nobility be sure to include Gustaf Eigenstierna Den introducerade svenska adelns attartavlor (Stockholm, 1925-36). It is the standard reference for Swedish and Finnish nobility and has been put online at adelsvapen.com

I love adelsvapen.com Norm. :) But some of it has also been questioned at times.
Do you have references for that?

http://www.genealogi.net/oldgf/sf_arkiv/adel/elgen_sat.htm

Genealogiska Föreningen, where they say that even if it is better than everything that came before it it still has some flaws.

Elgenstierna är den senaste av flera editioner av Riddarhusets ättartavlor och den mest källkritiska (trots åtskilliga brister). I stor utstäckning är föregångarna därmed inaktuella.

I rely on Google: Elgenstierna is the latest of several editions of the Knight's Hall ättartavlor and the most critical source (despite several shortcomings).  They further say In Part IX are additions and corrections that should be observed.  Have these additions and corrections been included in the online version?

re: adelsvapen

I have a mere passing interest in two names (no direct relation), so had a look on the site and was surprised at the glaring errors. If my tiny sampling is any indication, then one should regard the whole collection as suspect -- anecdotal at best.

Adelsvapen and Elgenstierna,

Adelsvapen.com is a Wiki where people can add articles. This is from one of the newer articles. It says that it corrects some of Elgenstierna's wrongful data by using later published research.

Lena,

It's wonderful that you want to create some new categories for Swedish aristocracy.  We want to ensure that the categories are set up properly so they will appear in the right places, and also to be sure they don't already exist elsewhere.

You can go to the following location and search for categories by key word:  https://www.google.com/cse/publicurl?cx=003048598688029858478:aemrovxydzo . In the box "Wikitree Category Search" type in a word you are considering as part of your category title.

You also can get to the category search from this page:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Categories

With regard to wars, there are 12 Swedish ones here:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Wars_1500-1799

and 4 here:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Wars_1800-1899

Once you've looked to see what is there and come up with categories you would like to create, please email me and I will work with you to set up the categories you'd like.

I went ahead and set up a category for Duke of Södermanland.  So you just need to enter the following in the biography section of the profile:

Category:Duke_of_Södermanland

I set this up as a sub-category of Duchies in Sweden.  You can see it here:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Duchies_in_Sweden

Email me and I'll help you.

Thank you Darlene! I am not sure what happened back in July. It was summer and I probably had other things to do and I am afraid I never got back to you with the categories. I have not done much around this but I have set up some categories under Sweden. I create new categories as I go along and hope I have done nothing wrong.
Lena, no problem. I know how that goes. I see a few Swedish house categories set up, and they were done correctly as to capitalization. If you need help, feel free to ask here on G2G.
