What is the policy for adding parents of a child when no dates are known for the parents?

For example, I know who the parents of Thomas are thanks to his baptism record, but have no dates for them as yet.

Thanks

If the birth date of the children is known (and it should be if a new profile is listed) the parents can be speculativly dated 20 years for the mother and twentyfive years for the father before the first child's birth. A note {{Date Guess}} should be included in the Biogoraphy.
Crossed in the posting, Tom, glad we concur!

Yes, Tom, delighted to see The Old Standard upheld (F = 25, M = 20) -- more data located, that can be adjusted.

If you have names for the parents, it is standard genealogical practice to enter them.  However, to enter them in Wiki tree you need either a birth year, or a death year.

If Thomas Myhill is the only known child of these parents, an estimate for parent's birth could be 21 years before his birth year (explain in biography).  If other children are known, it would be 21 years from the first known child's birth year.

Or you could put in an estimated death date for them, after 1667 - again, explain in the biography.  Use {{DateGuess}} template as appropriate.

Someone else may know nothing about Thomas, but know something about another child of theirs, and would link up.

Hope this helps,

Margaret

From Style Guide -

''Become familiar with standard practice for the time period and geographical area of interest. For example, in the 1700s and 1800s in Northern Europe and the New England colonies, women often married at about 20-21 and men around 25. The first child was typically born within the first year of marriage.''

For ease of calculation, my estimates for both men and women are 21 at marriage, sometimes if I find the appropriate record it is quite accurate, sometimes it is way out, but it gives a starting point for further research

Thank you both Margaret & Tom.

Just to make sure I fully understand....

Because I know the parents of Thomas Myhill thanks to his baptism, I add them as parents and put an approximate birth year and explain that birth year in the notes/biography section so as to allow others to connect to them if needed.
You've got it right, Kathy.

Thank you for your efforts!

Hi Kathy

In a situation like this I add the information to the biography.  This way there is information and a source for other researchers to work from.
