Parentage of Joshua & James Bond b. circa 1800 in Maryland/Baltimore?

I am looking for any information pertaining to these brothers, both of whom were educated as physicians.  James Bond (yeah, really) actually practiced medicine, but it's unclear whether Joshua ever did.  Both men were "from Maryland" and James was apparently born in Baltimore around 1800.  Both were at times given the title Dr., and the suffix Esq.

Joshua was American Consul in Montevideo from around 1824 to 1835.  James was also in Montevideo and was made Acting Consul during Joshua's absence.  Later he was made Vice-Consul.  Joshua married Mary Hawkins of New York, (daughter of Col. Samuel Hawkins, deceased at time of this marriage) in Delaware County, NY on Nov 7, 1828.  They are known to have had at least three sons who survived long enough to receive tutoring in classical languages, when the family lived in Pelotas, Brazil c. 1846.

James became a skilled and prominent physician within the English-speaking colony in Montevideo and lived in that city for much if not most of his life.  He had one son, Francis Edward Bond, who was born (likely) in America but raised primarily in Montevideo.  F.E. Bond was also a physician who obtained his training in Europe, but lived most of his life and died in Uruguay.  Little is known of James' wife, who died of tuberculosis shortly after her only child was born around 1836.  She may have been a sister of Joshua's wife, for she is only identified as Miss Hawkins of New York, though the marriage took place in "Buenos Ayres" (as it was spelled at the time) on Dec 20, 1833.

James died in Philadelphia in 1882.

This is all the hard and factual data I have on these brothers.  Since Joshua married earlier and was Consul before James was Vice-Consul, I suspect he was the elder brother.  See James' or Francis' profiles for more anecdotal informtion on them.  Having no vital data on Joshua Bond, I have not yet created a profile.

There is a family story that the brothers were descended from the prominent Philadelphia physician Dr. Thomas Bond, Sr., (originally from Calvert Co., Maryland) who founded the first hospital in the colonies.  But I have found nothing so far to corroborate this.

Most particularly I would like to know who James' wife was and who the parents of Joshua and James were.  There were a very great many Bonds in Maryland when they were born, and a very great many of them were doctors, so it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.  Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!

Nice overview, Kate Hunter. Sounds like a facinating family to research.
Thanks, Gene.  I find it pretty fascinating, but it's good to know it interests others as well.

Have you researched the Bond's in Chester and Bucks County PA? Many were Quakers that migrated to Baltimore and the surrounding area in the mid to late 1700's. The History of Downington and/or the Genealogy of the Sharpless Family may have information on your Bond family. Both references can be downloaded as pdf's from Google Books. If you can't find these references, email be at Coyote1752@gmail.com and I'll send them to you.

I found my Samuel Bond in Chester County PA but that brickwall is proving to be reinforces with 18" steel plates.

I have a bit more information to add to this thread, though plenty of mystery still remains.

James Bond's wife was apparently named Laura Isabella Hawkins.  They married December 20, 1833 in Buenos Ayres, where there was another English-speaking colony, a sort of twin to the one in Montevideo.  About a year before the marriage date, there was a Hannah or Anna Hawkins who died in that city.  She was widow to a Samuel Hawkins.  She may have been Laura's mother, but I cannot establish that with any certainty.  Nor can I in any way establish that Laura was related to Joshua's wife, despite having the same maiden name.

James and Joshua had another brother, Henry Bond, also born in Maryland who was yet another physician.  He lived and worked in Buenos Ayres and married into the politically ruling family of Argentina at that time.  He died fairly young but left at least two children behind. ( I haven't added all his children since I lack vital data for one of them.)

So although I have been able to find some information, the parentage of the Bond brothers remains very mysterious.  They *must* have been from a prominent family to all have been educated as physicians, and to obtain the social and political positions they did.  All indications point to Maryland for their origin, and Baltimore specifically for James.  Yet I can find no trace of their family of origin.  Joshua is also lost to records once his consulship ends.
