Biography

JOEL ABBOTT, b. at Brookfield, 1 Jan 1732/3 son of Peter Abbott and Lydia Gilbert;[1] d. at Brimfield, 23 Jan 1823;[2][3] m. at Brookfield, 20 Jan 1763,[4] JUDITH STEVENS, b. 13 May 1744; Judith d. 6 May 1800.[5]

Joel and Judith resided in Brookfield where they kept a farm.

Joel Abbott headed a household of thirteen persons at Brookfield in 1790: one male 16 and over, five males under 16, and seven females.[6] The Abbott household was ten persons at Brookfield in 1800: one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, two males 10 to 15, two males 16 to 25, two females 16 to 25, and two females 26 to 44.[7]

The family remained in Brookfield through 1810 and were afterwards in Brimfield where Joel owned interest in a fulling mill on the Quinebaug River. In 1820, Joel’s household was eleven persons at Brimfield: one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, one male under 10, two males 16 to 25, one male 26 to 44, one female under 10, one female 10 to 15, and three females 16 to 25.[8]

On 14 May 1814, Joel Abbott yeoman of Brimfield, in consideration of seven hundred and fifty dollars, conveyed to Jairus Abbott clothier of Brimfield one-half of a parcel containing twenty acres together with half the fulling mill and the lower story of the carding machine. On 6 April 1816, Joel Abbott yeoman and Jairus Abbott clothier with his wife Elizabeth, in consideration of nine hundred dollars, conveyed to the Brimfield Cotton and Woolen Manufacturing Company their rights in the clothier works and fulling mill with the appurtenances and utensils and the buildings on the north side of the Quinebaug River.[9]

Military

Joel Abbott served during the French and Indian Wars as a private with British forces in 1756 and 1758 and as Corporal in 1759. He was involved with the expeditions to Crown Point, Louisburg, and Québec.[10]

Joel Abbott is honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution for patriotism:1) 3rd Precinct of Brookfield[11]

Children

Joel Abbott and Judith Stevens were parents of thirteen children born at Brookfield.

i GIDEON ABBOTT, b. 13 Oct 1763;[12] d. at Palmer, MA, 8 Sep 1801; m. at Palmer, 28 Dec 1790, MARY WALKER, b. at Brookfield, about 1766 daughter of Sylvanus and Mary (King) Walker; Mary d. at Palmer, 23 Oct 1846.

ii ZEBINA ABBOTT, b. 10 Oct 1765;[13] d. at Appleton, ME, 11 Feb 1856; m. at Spencer, 24 Mar 1791, BETSY SUMNER, b. at Spencer, 2 Jan 1770 daughter of John and Abigail (Pease) Sumner.

iii RUTH ABBOTT, b. 24 Aug 1767;[14] d. (burial at Prescott), 4 Aug 1835. Ruth had a daughter Lucy who was an out-of-wedlock child. Lucy is recorded as a child of Aaron and Thankful Forbes in the Brookfield records, but in some records (death record of one of the children of Lucy) her name is given as Lucy Abbott. Lucy’s death record gives her mother’s name as Ruth Abbott and father’s name as Joel Forbes.[15] Ruth is buried as Miss Ruth Abbott.[16]
