Research Notes

Dorothy and Dorcas are likely the same person. From George Abbott: "Dorothy Abbott and Dorcas Abbott. These may be the same person, but they are married to men with different first names (Darius Root and John Rootes) so it is not likely they can be merged. It appears that Dorcas is the correct daughter based on George's Probate record." See further notes in comments below.

Very nice! We'll get to the bottom of the Dorcas/Dorothy debate, no doubt about it!

Hi Loretta,

Hoping to advance the research about whether this Dorothy (Abbott-4555) is alias Dorcas (Abbott-166), otherwise one daughter of the now inked father, George Abbott George Abbott (bef.1635-1689). (In 2021, WikiTree's Puritan Great Migration Project placed a maintenance category about this on the profile of her now linked father.)

Have pulled various references to Dorothy/Dorcas. Will use this as a workspace to comment further on those references.--Gene

1906. Lemuel Abijah Abbott, Descendants of George Abbott, of Rowley, Mass. ... ([Boston, T. R. Marvin & son, printers], 1906), 975-978 (George Abbott of Norwalk); digital images, InternetArchive, calls the daughter Dorothy, married Darius Root.

  • No indication this author did much work on George Abbott's daughters.
  • Reports the names of George's children are taken from his will and. then "The names of the children have been taken from old deeds, the Abbot Register (1847) and History of Norwalk"; writing separately that the latter two sources have the descendants "somewhat confused." Finally, author was "unable to find" the will, so that he relied on Abbot Reg. (1847).

19__. Abstract of Probate Records at Fairfield, Connecticut, Down to 1721 (n.p., 19--), 3 (George Abbot); digital images, InternetArchive, will as dated 2 May 1689; proved; inventory filed 12 March 1690; calls this daughter Dorcas Roote ... "also called _____."

1930. Jacobus (FOOF, 1930) called her "Dorcas, died at Woodbury 15 May 1720, married John Roots" and noted, "Once called Dorothy in the recorded will, which we suppose a clerical error" (see HathiTrust).

1870. In his work on the Root family, James Pierce Root (1870) called John Rootes' wife "Dorcas _____" (see InternetArchive).

2015. New England Marriages prior to 1700 (2015), 2:1298, has entry for John Root married Dorcas Abbott. Works consulted as "Fairfield 1:403; Fairfield Fam. 1:5, 505; Fairfield Prob. 27; Kilburn 42; DePew 91, 92, 121; Root 53+; TAG 9:21." 2015. New England Marriages prior to 1700 (2015), 2:1298, has entry for Darius Root married Dorothy Abbot. Finding that only in "Abbott 978." (For database and image, see AmericanAncestors, by subscription.)
