Prince George Co., VA, WB/DB 1710-1713, p. 77, R 20 Feb 1711: “There is a contract of marriage agreed upon between Capt. Josh. Wynne, Gent. of Prince George Co. and Frances Cocke, relict of Thomas Cocke dec’d and marriage is shortly to be solemnized. Said Joshua and Frances appoint Robert Munford, John Anderson & William Anderson of Prince George Co. to be parties in trust in behalf of them, that said Frances, after her marriage, to enjoy all the estate she now hath, and to dispose of it as she sees fit. Wit: Peter Jones, Tho. Cocke.” [3]
FRANCES ANDERSON, daughter of Reynard Anderson and Elizabeth Skiffen, was born between 1663 and 1670 in Charles City County, Virginia, just northeast of current Petersburg, and died 1726 in Prince George County, Virginia. She married (1) JOHN HERBERT before 1687.[4] He was born 1659 in London, England, and died 16 March 1703/04 at “Puddledock,” Charles City County. She married (2) THOMAS COCKE ca. 1705 [or 1707?]. She married (3) JOSHUA WYNNE ca. 1711. He was born 1662 and died 1715 in Prince George County.
John Herbert, a wealthy trader, lived on his estate “Puddlecock,” east of Petersburg; the widowed Mrs. Herbert was credited with 3925 acres of land in the 1704 rent roll of Prince George County and 1360 acres in Henrico County
In 1716 (during her third marriage) Mrs. Frances Wynne was still executrix of (her first husband’s) Herbert’s estate. She made her own will on 16 October 1725, probated 4 March 1726/7.[5]
Frances’s second husband, CAPT. THOMAS COCKE was born ca. 1662, son of Thomas Cocke and (possibly) Agnes Powell. His will, 16 January 1706/7, with a codicil 14 February 1706/7, was proven 15 October 1725. In his will he named his issue: Thomas, James Powell, Brazure, Mary, and Elizabeth. These were all children by his first wife, Mary Brasseur of Nansemond, daughter of John Brasseur and Mary Pitt.[6]

Born in 1663 in Jordan’s Parish, Virginia, Joshua Wynne died in 1715 in Dinwiddie, Henrico County, Virginia. Joshua, who was an Indian interpreter, was killed by the Indians in revenge after his servant killed one of their “great men.” Joshua served as justice in the Charles City County court, sheriff of Prince George County, 1705-1712, and commanded various militia units in the Virginia colonies. He made several trips to England trading tobacco, was responsible for treaties with Indians from New York to Virginia, and mentioned numerous times as a close family friend of the Byrds of Westover.[8]
Joshua Wynne had a first wife, Mary Jones, who predeceased her husband sometime between 1707 and 1711, leaving him free to marry Frances (Anderson) (Herbert) Cocke.
13 May 1717: Deed from Frances Wynne of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., to William Staindback of Parish of Westopher, Prince George Co., 142 acres in Westopher Parish at the mouth of Simson’s Gutt, adjoining William Rany. To daughter Martha Cocke, one Negro woman named Temp & one Negro woman named [blotted] & one Indian girl named Phebe, “the feather bed I now lye on with all the furniture thereunto belonging and my Chest of Drawers and all my cloaths & my Horse and Sadle and one Indian girl named Hannah.” Also £30 currency.
To son Richard Herbert, “one Negro man named Ben[?] and one Negro woman named Doll & one Negro boy named Sam and one mulatto boy named Watt and one mulatto boy named Joe and all the Estate [unreadable] and one half of my Stock of Cattle” [mostly unreadable]
To daughter-in-law Mary Herbert, slaves [then unreadable]
To son Buller Herbert and to his heirs forever all the rest of estate and to be executor.
John Herbert was an agent in Virginia for Richard Buller, a London Merchant. Herbert was condemned for shipping out deerskins of the ship “Dolphin” on 13 December 1682. He was born ca. 1659 and died 17 March 1704/5 in the 46th year of his age, at “Puddledock,” his estate on the James River. His tombstone is now located at Blandford Churchyard in Petersburg.

21 April 1690, Land patent to John Herbert, 2870 acres in Charles City County, South of the Appomattox River [estate known as “Puddledock”] 21 April 1690, Land patent to John Herbert, 1215 acres in Charles City County, near Monksneck.
11 January 1693, Deed, from Thomas Batte to John Herbert, both of Charles City County, 980 acres in Henrico County, for £34 north side of Appomattox River on Old Town Creek and the river, bounded by land now or late Essex Bevil’s, and now or late Gabriel Arthur’s, 180 acres let out from part of said Batte’s joint patent taken up with Richard Buller. Thomas Batte also makes Mr. Peter Field and Mr. William Farrar his attorneys to acknowledge deed. Wit: James Minge, James Harrison, Richard Jones, Peter Jones. Recorded 1 June 1694.[12]
28 September 1695: Deed from John Byrd of Henrico County to John Herbert of Charles City County. Makes over all household goods and moveables to Mr. John Herbert for a considerable debt I owe him. Wit: William Anderson, Jaen Gun. Recorded at the request of Thomas Batte on behalf of John Herbert’s wife, 2 December 1695.[13]
28 Feb. 1703, Deed from John Herbert of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., Merchant, to Henry Anderson of Bristol Parish, Henrico Co., and Prudence, his wife, leases for life of both for 1 ear Indian Corn per year, if Prudence remain a widow. Land adjoining John Archer, and formerly purchased by Mr. Richard Buller of old George Archer, dec’d. Wit: Richard Beardon, Thomas (I) Gent, Joshua Irby. Signed: John Herbert. Recorded 1 Aug. 1707.[14]
3 Aug. 1711, Deed from Edward Evins of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., to William Smith of same, for valuable consideration, 60 acres purchased by said Evins of Thomas Jackson, being part of a greater tract belonging to Richard Smith, on north side of Cattail Run, bounded by John Herbert, said Smith and George Tilman, with all houses, etc. Edw’d Evans. Wit: Richard Smith, Sr., Henry ( ) King, Sr. Recorded 10 March 1712. Livery & Seizin witnessed by Cha. Williams, Thos (I) Ghent.[15]
HERBERT in Virginia Gazette, 7 Aug. 1752 John Herbert, late merchant on the James River married Mrs. Frances Anderson & died in 1704 or 1705. He left 2 sons, Buller Herbert & Richard Herbert & a daughter Martha Herbert who married James Powell Cocke about 1718, if any of their descendants apply to the printer they may hear something to their advantage.

The Frances Anderson who married Peter Wynne was born 1685ish - her profile is Anderson-4717. The WFT ref apparently combined them.
Given the birth years for the attached children, I'll edit her to be Reynard's dau. b 1665ish, 3rd husband Joshua (not Peter) Wynne.
