Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Judith (Armistead) Carter was a Virginia colonist.

Judith Armistead

Origin

Judith is assumed to have been born c. 1662, at the family home and plantation called "Hesse" (although the actual house was not built until 1674),[1] Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia Colony. Judith was the eldest child of John Armistead and Judith Hone.[2]

The guessed birth date, 1662, for Judith is based on the statement by Virginia Garber, that brother, William, the third child was born about 1665.[1]

The date of 23 February 1665, comes from FindaGrave.

Marriage

Judith married in 1688 to Robert "King" Carter.[2]

Their children were:[3]

  1. John, b ca 1689, died 1742; mar Elizabeth Hill of Shirley
  2. Elizabeth b1692; mar Nathaniel Burwell
  3. Judith d in infancy,
  4. Sarah d at age 15
  5. Judith (the second named Judith), b 1695; mar Mann Page[2]

Note: Some sources, including the Foundation for Historic Christ Church, place the birth date of John Carter III at 1696,[3]while others place it at 1689/90.[4][2]

Little is known about the intimate family life of Robert and Judith during these years.[2] Judith died February 23, 1699, and only three of her children survived to adulthood.[4] Robert married again, to Elizabeth Landon Willis, and had ten more children with her.[3]

Death and Legacy

Judith died on February 23, 1699, at Corotoman Plantation, Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia Colony.[3][1]

Armistead-1071 and Armistead-3 appear to represent the same person because: same husband and son, the birth date on -1071 is incorrect as it is after the birth of the son by 24 years.

Robinson-12522 and Armistead-3 appear to represent the same person because: My records show that Robert "King" Carter had two wives, one Judith Armistead and one named Elizabeth "Betty" Landon". These two Judith's, both with Armistead in their name, must be the same person.

Edward Carter Col (Carter-10272), born 1709, was disconnected from this profile as husband. Judith's husband was Robert King Carter (Carter-412).
