Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Hannah (Armistead) Sheldon was a Virginia colonist.

Hannah Armistead was born in 1679 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, the youngest of five children and two daughters of Anthony Armistead Sr. and Hannah Ellyson.

Her exact death date is unknown, but she was dead prior to July 1717 when her husband William Sheldon is named in the Will of his new father-in-law Thomas Nutting.

Marriage

William Sheldon and Hannah Armistead were granted a marriage license 10 December 1698 in Elizabeth City County.[1][2] They had no children.

After his wife Hannah died, William Sheldon married Katherine Nutting, daughter of Thomas Nutting, justice of peace for York County, Virginia, and had no issue.[3]

Research Notes

Marriage and Death

Hannah Armistead married William Sheldon, not William Shelton Sr.. Hannah and William Sheldon had no children, and she was dead before July 1717. In the will of Thomas Nutting dated 11 July 1717 and proved 18 September 1717, he bequeathed "the plantation at the head of the Charles river to his daughter Katherine Sheldon and if she dies without issue, then to my son-in-law William Sheldon. ... to son-in-law Capt. William Sheldon my seal ring, cane and sword; ... son-in-law Capt. William Sheldon and Jane Nutting executors."[4] This establishes that William Sheldon married his second wife, Katherine Nutting, prior to July 1717. William and Katherine also had no children.

William Shelton Sr. is being removed as husband of Hannah Armistead. All children linked to William Shelton are also being removed. (Strutton-11 16:31, 2 March 2022 (UTC))

Disputed Children

John Armisted Shelton (abt.1698-abt.1734) is attached as a child, but the biography says that they had no children. Spratlin-29 16:22, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

How do we know that this William Sheldon and Hannah Armistead died without issue? Right now, the profile for John Armisted Shelton is attached as a child to Hannah (Armistead) Sheldon and William Sheldon, which according to this profile is a mistake, but that is what is claimed in the source cited in that profile (T.H. Bailey, Christian-Skelton History and Genealogy, (Kingsport, TN: s.p., 1964), 228 & 243; images, FamilySearch, (https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/136913-christian-skelton-history-and-genealogy : accessed 29 Oct 2022)). Bailey does not cite any source for the claim he makes, but it is also not clear to me from this profile why he's wrong. Can someone clarify?

William Shelton Jr. (abt.1706-bef.1789) is not the son of Hannah (Armistead) Shelton (abt.1679-bef.1717). She has been incorrectly attached as wife of William Shelton Sr. (abt.1671-1734). Hannah actually married Capt. William Sheldon, not Shelton. She died prior to 1717 when her husband married his second wife, Katherine Nutting. See the profile of William Shelton, Sr., for records supporting Hannah's marriage to William Sheldon and reasons for removing William Shelton, Sr., and his children from her profile.

William Shelton, Jr., should be removed as son of Hannah Armistead.

The birth dates of several of the children for Hannah Armistead Shelton are before she is of age to conceive. Her birth year is stated as 1687, yet she has children attached to this profile beginning with birth years of 1687:

John 1687 Jane 1695

As well, the year of her marriage on this profile is 1698.
