Jane's family were among the early families to settle in Edwardsburgh, Ontario. Prior to the American Revolution the family had lived in Saratoga Springs, New York. Her father was Thomas Armstrong who came from Ireland prior to the American Revolution. Her mother's family was from Virginia. Jane married Andrew O'Neill when she was 15 years old. They had nine children live to adulthood: Thomas, John, Nancy, Alexander, James, Henry, Catherine, Maria and Andrew.
