Savage's Genealogical Dictionary:
JOSHUA Atwater, of Boston, was son of Joshua Atwater. He had by wife Rebecca, child Rebecca, b. 25 Feb. 1687; and then by w. Mary, Samuel, b. 3 Mar. 1688. Savage believes that one or the other of these wife's names is incorrect. Also he says "that it is somewhere writ. that Joshua m. Mary, wid. of Samuel Smith, and d. of Samuel Maverick." He left it undecided.[3]
