Jesse was born in 1720 in Massachusetts, United States.^[1] He was the son of Eleazer Atwood and Joanna Strout.

Jesse Atwood married Ruth Young Wiley (1732-1790) on June 30, 1747, in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts. ^{[2] [3]}

His wife Ruth Young passed away in 1790 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, at the age of 58. They had been married 43 years.
