Martin Aucoin was born around 1595-1600, in France.[1] He was not the son of Martin Aucoin and Suzanne Barbot / Barboteau. His parents are unknown.[2]

Martin Aucoin became a joiner, or carpenter.[2][3]

He married twice. His first wife was Barbe Minguet, whom he married in France around 1620. The couple had two daughters,

who would eventually migrate to Acadia.[2][3] It has been indicated that their eldest daughter, Michelle, who was born about ten years prior to Jeanne, may have been from a prior relationship. No record of Michelle's baptism has been identified, though Jeanne was baptized at Ste. Marguerite de La Rochelle. A son of Martin named Nicolas Aucoin was buried at Saint-Barthélemy on 30 January 1632, and is believed to be the son of Martin and Barbe, as he died just ten days after Martin married his second wife, Marie Sallé.[3]

Following the death of his first wife, Barbe Minguet, Martin Aucoin married Marie Sallé on 20 January 1632 at the church of Saint-Barthélemy in La Rochelle.[4][5][3] The couple had at least one son, Jean Aucoin, who was baptized on 15 Nov 1632 at Saint-Barthélemy de La Rochelle. Sadly, Jean died when he was only seven months old, and was buried at Saint-Barthélemy on 25 June 1633.[2][3]

It is unknown whether Martin Aucoin ever traveled or migrated to Acadie in Nouvelle-France. His eldest daughter from his first marriage, Michelle Aucoin, had migrated to Acadie before 1642; and his second daughter, Jeanne Aucoin, also migrated to Acadia by the mid-1640s, marrying François Girouard there in about 1647.[2][3]

Martin's second wife, Marie Sallé, did migrate at some point to Acadie, where she remarried, probably sometime after 1651 to Jean Claude. She was recorded in the 1671 census, but by that time she was again a widow.[2][3]

Since no record of death has been identified for Martin Aucoin, and the date of Marie Sallé's remarriage in Acadie is unknown (although believed to be after 1651), it is unknown when and where Martin died, but is only certain to have been some years prior to 1671, by which time his wife's second husband had also died.[2][3]

Research Notes

Parents of Martin Aucoin are unknown.

Note by genealogist Stephen A. White in corrections for DGFA, p. 41, citing an article by J. Nerrou, «Recherches sur la famille Aucoin: Du nouveau», p. 29r, 29v, dans F.-R. Perron, Acadie: Recherche des promoteurs et recruteurs en France, suite no 7, Paris, 2000.:

(Translation) Mr. Nerrou proposes another generation of ancestors of Aucoin by identifying the carpenter from La Rochelle with the son of Martin Aucoin and Susanne Baboteau who was baptized near La Rochelle on the 26th April 1595. Unfortunately, the basis for this conclusion is not explained in his article.

Note by genealogist Marcel Walter Landry:
(Translation) Some researchers have since proposed that Martin Aucoin (the elder) was the son of Martin and Susanne Barboteau, born in 1595. Except that this is not the Aucoin family, but the Angevin family (or Langevin), from the parish of Cougne. We do not explain what makes such a connection possible, nor how these Angevins would have become Aucoins. We must therefore avoid adding this additional generation for lack of evidence, even if these names are now circulating on the internet.

Note by genealogist Karen Theriot Reader:

There are many who claim that this Martin AUCOIN was baptized on 26 Apr 1695 at Laleu, Charente Maritime, France (near La Rochelle), son of Martin AUCOIN & Susanne BARBOTEAU. The record in Latin is found here (right page last entry): http://www.archinoe.net/v2/ark:/18812/6141b016b7722fcdf2c62fccb5bb7af1 However, others assert that that was Martin Angevin, from another family altogether.

Children of Martin Aucoin. Stephen White has made substantial corrections to his 1999 genealogy of the two Aucoin families (see corrections linked to his ”Dictionnaire Généalogique des Familles Acadiennes” (DGFA)). Based on these corrections, Martin Aucoin and his wife, Barbe Minguet, are the parents of sisters Michelle and Jeanne Aucoin, who used to be recorded separately. Martin and his second wife, Marie Sallé, no longer have a son listed as Martin, who married Marie Gaudet.[3]

In 2003 revisions to the DGFA, it has been indicated that the family's eldest daughter, Michelle Aucoin, who was born about ten years prior to Jeanne, may have been from a prior relationship (Michelle (peut-être issue d'une alliance antérieure) n v 1621).[3]

A Francois is listed in some family trees as a child of Martin Aucoin and Barbe Minguet, and the father of Martin Aucoin who married Marie Gaudet. See further details of this debate under his profile.

Translation of third note: Arnaud Gyon's signature in Martin Aucoin's marriage certificate with Marie Sallé is the same as that affixed on the baptismal certificate of Jeanne Aucoin, daughter of Martin Aucoin and Barbe Minguet. This assures us that it is the same Martin Aucoin in both acts, even if there is no mention of widowhood in his marriage certificate with Marie Sallé.

This profile still holds it’s Acadien tag, though I would agree with some of the others that it would be more appropriate for him to instead hold the tag “ French Parent of Acadian Pioneer” since his arrival in Acadie is not supported by any evidence.
posted by Travis Cheramie
Hi, Travis, the Acadian project often includes parents of the early pioneers due to confusion or inconsistencies or lack of sources for their potential parents. I did remove the Migrating Ancestor tag as it is not known if he came to Acadie. I don't see others proposing a tag called French Parent of Acadian Pioneer, nor am I aware we have such a tag. Did I miss some comments?

Earlier comments I did see had to do with incorrect parents and that has been corrected in the profile. That type of confusion is a reason to leave him Project Protected so incorrect or disputed parents can't come back without review. For any Project Protected profile, there must be a project associated with it, so removing the Project means we need to remove the protection and that opens him up to the undocumented parents problem again. We have other French parents that are included in the project for the same reasons.

Best wishes, cousin! Cindy

Aucoin-1389 and Aucoin-53 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same person
posted by Lauren Barta
Hi Lauren. It has been suggested by researcher Jacques Nerrou in 2000, and repeated in many family trees, that these two men were the same. However, as genealogist Stephen White pointed out in 2003, Nerrou doesn't explain in his article how he came to this conclusion, what makes such a connection possible. More sources are needed to show that Martin baptized on 26 April 1595, son of Martin Angevin and Suzanne Barboteau, is the same person as Martin Aucoin, also born around 1595, whose daughters settled in Acadie. His parents are not named in his marriage record to Marie Sallé. If new research has demonstrated this connection, it would be interesting to know more about it.

Aucoin-1389 and Aucoin-53 do not represent the same person because: No sufficient sources showing the connection between these two men.

I see that this profile shows Martin Aucoin and Suzanne Barboteau as his parents; however, I don't see any note as to White's critique of this, which is found in Ajouts and corrections (which is otherwise cited here in other contexts): "M. Nerrou propose une autre génération des ascendants des Aucoin en identifiant le menuisier de La Rochelle avec le fils de Martin Aucoin et de Susanne Baboteau qui a été baptisé aux environs de La Rochelle le 26 avril 1595. Malheureusement, la fondée de cette conclusion n'est pas expliquée dans son article."

Do we have proof that links the Martin baptized in 1595 with the one married to Barbe Minguet and Marie Sallé, to address this critique?

We truly appreciate your bringing this to our attention. Respected genealogists have noted lack of evidence for this parentage (see research notes). If there are no objections by the profile managers, the parents will be removed.

It seems apparent to me that this is more complicated than just removing parents. Much of the first half of the profile seems to relate to an actual son Martin of those parents, or at the very least the birth itself. Seems to me it would be more appropriate to split these men up -- disconnect Martin's parents, and remove whatever connections and information are not supported for him; then create a new profile for the other Martin, attaching him to his documented birth parents and whatever other details are known for that Martin.
The text (end of 5th paragraph) says that Jeanne and Nicolas were baptized at St. Barthelemy, but Jeanne was baptized at St. Marguerite's . See http://www.archinoe.net/v2/ark:/18812/0e8b3add3b2468ef44d06244d0b1b2e6 and then go to image 68. A direct link is available but won't specify location other than La Rochelle. In fact your cited source (DGFA corrections) does not indicate where Nicolas was baptized, only where he was buried and does indicate Jeanne was baptized at St. Marguerite's

Thank you, Donna, for your sharp eyes on those discrepancies. I think I got all the mis-statements re=moved, and also removed some duplicate information not needed in two or more places. If you wouldn't mind checking it again, I'd appreciate that.

Thank you! Cindy

There's a discrepancy between the death date in the events "Died about 1671 ..." and in the Biography, "Martin Aucoin died before 1651, the year his second wife remarried in Port-Royal or France".
posted by Richard Bouchard
Thanks for pointing this out Richard. His exact date of death is unknown. It is believed to be between 1651 and 1671 based on his second wife’s remarriage with Jean-Claude. Biography has been edited to remove discrepancy.

Thanks for your input Donna! I am removing the immigrant and Acadian template until evidence of his arrival in Acadia is provided. Therefore, I will remove him from the list of Acadian First Families. His daughters Jeanne and Michelle are on the list with their husbands.

Annette, I was just wondering the same thing. I was surprised to see him on the First Families list but I guess since his children settled here, it would be difficult to just select one of them as the Patriarch/Matriarch of Aucoins in Acadia.
