The Acadian Babin family stems from one man, Antoine Babin, who lived at Port-Royal (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada).[1]

Antoine Babin was born in 1625 in La Chaussée, Poitou, France.[2]Christophe Babin and Renee Rou appeared in some family trees as Antoine's parents. This couple did indeed have a son baptized Anthoine on 6 May 1620 at Les Ulmes, Maine-et-Loire, France[3] but we can't be certain this is the same Antoine Babin without additional evidence such as a marriage record citing parent names or some other confirmation they are the same person.

Antoine (36) married Marie Mercier (16) (born about 1645 in France; daughter of Unknown Mercier and Françoise Gaudet) in 1662 in France according to the depositions of his descendants, Antoine came to Acadia from France with his wife.[4] Their known children were:

  1. Marie Babin (abt. 1663–bef. 1737) .
  2. Charles Babin (abt. 1664– ) .
  3. Vincent Babin (abt. 1665–abt. 1718) .
  4. Jeanne Babin (abt. 1667–aft. 1748) .
  5. Marguerite Babin (abt. 1670–1730) .
  6. Catherine Babin (abt. 1672–aft. 1755) .
  7. Anne Babin (1674–abt. 1722) .
  8. Antoine Babin (abt. 1676–aft. 1686) .
  9. Madeleine Babin (1678–1735) .
  10. Françoise Marie Babin (1681–aft. 1725) .
  11. Jean Babin (abt. 1684–bef. 1751)

The family was found in the first Acadian census with Marie age 25 with five children.[5] Four more, mostly girls, were added by 1678.[6]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Antoine BABIN, aged 55, was living with his wife, Marie MERCIER, aged 40, and their eight children: Vincent, aged 21, Marguerite, aged 16, Catherine, aged 14, Rnne [sic], aged 12, Antoine, aged 10, Magdelaine [sic], aged 8, Francoise, aged 5, and Jean, aged 2. Though they didn't acquire much land, they did have 1 gun and more livestock over the years, reporting 1-1/2 arpents, 10 cattle, 12 sheep and 8 hogs.[7]

Antoine died at Port-Royal between 1686 and 1688.[8]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Some based his age on the census closest to his birth (1671) where he was listed as 45 years of age; Stephen White based his age on the 1686 Census where he was listed as 55. In his DGFA (English supplement, page cxxxiv), for ages that were inconsistent, White usually took the most consistent, followed by the one closest to the person's birth, unless the age appeared to be a rounding off and easily divisible by 10 or 5. It was not clear to me why he chose the 1686 census age in this instance. Perhaps his wife Marie was rather young in 1671 (25) to have a 9 year old, which would make her 15 when she got pregnant.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Antoine by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Antoine:

Antoine's father is Christophe and mother Renee Rou. Philippe caillebeau has them listed as Antoine's parents and i email him 10 years ago about them, He is a relative of Antoine Babin. Philippe lives in France and he sent me the baptism certificate of Antoine Babin.

If you email me, I will send you a copy. There is also a pic of it on his website about mid way down. http://philippe.caillebeau.free.fr/Image4.gif

it reads:

On May 6, 1620, Anthoine Babin, son of Christophe Babin, was baptized and Renée Rou was godfather Anthoine Rou, godmother Perrine Boudoiron.

Would you be able to upload an image of the baptism certificate to his profile? This would be a very important document to have so we could add his parents. Thanks for letting us know.

Removed Vincent Babin as Antoine's father absent any supporting documentation. If there is some proof, we can add him back.

The biography and the details do not match. The bio says he was born in France around 1626 or 1631. DGFA says 1631. He is now connected to Vincent Babin as father---not sure why. Often seen as Christophe Babin & Renee Rou, but Michelle Brooks site linked below shows that Antoine was baptized 6 May 1620 which seems too early for him.

Lianne & Don, I do agree. I am on my phone right now so it wouldn't be wise for me to attempt the disconnects - because it's best to make a note of the profiles removed (on all profile pages involved) so it will be noticeable for future viewers that may want to "re-add" or create new profiles. If the changes are only noted in this section (comments) it can be moved out of sight as more comments are added.
There are no sources listed for the parents or sisters, either. I would suggest removing the parents and sister until such time as any of the relationships can be documented.

Should Antoine Babin's parents be removed? They were added in July but no source has been specified. Does anyone have anything to add?
