Biography

Jean Babineau was born around 1660, based on his age in the 1693 census.[1]

Around 1691, Jean married Marguerite Boudrot born about 1648, from Port Royal NS (Acadian) Province Nova Scotia. She is the daughter of Michel Boudrot and Michelle Aucoin. [1] Marguerite died November 9, 1718.

Children:[1]

  2. Marguerite Babineau

In 1693, at Port Royal, Jean BABINEAU, aged 33, was living with his wife, Marie [sic] BOUDROT, aged 44, widow of Francois BOURG, and their daughter, Marie, aged 1. Also living with him was his son-in-law, Marie [sic] BOUDROT's son, Pierre BOURG, aged 10. The family owned 1 gun and was living on 25 arpents of cultivable land with 20 cattle, 15 sheep, and 20 pigs.[2]Living next door to him were his son-in-law, Alexandre BOURG, aged 22, and his daughter-in-law, Anne BOURG, aged 9.

In August 1695 Jean Babinot took the oath of loyalty to the king. On 2 December 1705 he was among the people that evaluated properties that needed to be purchased for the enlargement of the Port-Royal fort.[1]

He passed away on 5 September 1741 and was buried the next day.[3][1]

Research Notes

Note by Stephen White DGFA p. 66 : "Nicolas est recensé à Pentagouët en 1693.

(Translation : Nicolas was enumerated in Pentagouët in 1693. (...) A Jean Babinot also lived in Port-Royal at the same time; he served as a witness for Nicolas during the purchase of his home in Port-Royal; he acted as godfather at the baptism of Mary, daughter of Nicolas. According to Placide Gaudet, Nicolas and Jean were brothers (Genealogies Acadiennes, p. 225, 226). We do not know of any marriage between the grandchildren or great-grandchildren of Jean Babineau and the descendants of Nicolas Babineau. There is therefore no exemption from kinship capable of providing us with proof of this assertion.

Discussion: there are no known parents for Jean Babineau and it is uncertain that he was the brother of Nicolas Babineau. There is no documentation proving that Antoinne Babineau and Louise Bourdage were his parents and they have been removed.
