Biography

This profile is part of the Baldwin Name Study.

Birth and Parents

Buckinghamshire (historic flag)
Robert Baldwin was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

Robert, the fourth son of seven children of Henry Baldwin and Alice Kinge was born say 1576 at Aston, Clinton, Bucks, England.[1][2][3]

Marriage and Children

Robert married Joane Robinson, who was from Henley-on-the-Thames, Oxfordshire say 1602.[2]They had one child:

  1. Anne Baldwin (b. ca. 1604, Northchurch; d. 20 Feb 1661/2, Milford, CT) m. bef, 1632/3 at Aylesbury, Bucks, England, Alexander Bryan[2][3]

Robert Baldwin, yeoman, resided on lands obtained by inheritance from his father, Henry, and at lands in Flaunden, and Northchurch, Hertfordhire .[4][3]

Death and Burial

Robert Baldwin died between 22 March 1605 when is will was written and 1 April 1605 when it was proved; he evidently died young say his 29th year, and daughter Anne was an infant.[3]Robert was buried in St. Mary's Churchyard, Northchurch, Hertforshire, England.[5]

Will of Robert Baldwin

Robert Baldwin's will was dated 22 March [3 James] 1605 and proved 1 April 1605 by his brother Richard Baldwin, executor of his will, "My bodye to be buryed in the churche yarde of North Churche."[1][2]After small bequests to his aunt Lettice Foster, of Tring, and to the poor of St. Leonard's and Cholesbury, he left his estate to his wife "Joane" and daughter Anne. His overseer was his "Brother" (brother-in-law) Richard Salter.[3][1]

Research Notes

  • According to Seversmith, Robert Baldwin was born say 1576 on a farm held of the Manor of Dundrige in the parish Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire. In the following year [or two], his father, Henry, purchased the Manor from Sir John Packington and Robert was undoubtedly brought up in the manor house.[2]This information comes closest to identifying Robert's birth year and supports the comment that Robert died very young as his daughter, Anne, was an infant.[3]
  • According to Robert's will, his wife's name was "Joane" and her maiden name was "Robinson" from Henley-on-the-Thames, Oxforshire. She survived him.[2]
  • Before 1632/3, Anne, husband Alexander and son Richard had a bequest from her uncle Richard Baldwin of a freehold tenement in Wendover, Bucks. Alexander Byran (alias Bryant), was son of Thomas of Aylesbury. He was well educated.[3]

We can be rather sure that Henry Baldwin and Alice did not have two sons named Robert, one born 1562, Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, married Joane Robinson, and another born 1573, Reading, Berkshire. The confusion appears to derive from secondary sources (e.g., Dicken, Terrell Genealogy) showing a Robert Baldwin of Reading married to Joane Pigeone in Reading, 1590. Compare Robert Baldwin, born 1575 in Berkshire, although that profile also appears to have its own issues. It would seem appropriate to merge Baldwin-452 with Baldwin-1739, detaching the one from Henry and Alice, and resolving the date and marriage discrepancies along the way.

Paul, please see revised biography for Robert Baldwin of Bucks and Herts, son of Henry and Alice, wife Joane Robinson, which further distinguishes between Robert Baldwin of Berkshire and wife Joane Pigeone. This difference is also clarified in Research Notes. Thank you, Carol Baldwin

That is very helpful, Dr. Baldwin. I see also that this Robert died young, leaving only his wife and one infant daughter Anne. So then would not the attachment of daughter Jane be in error? Perhaps she is a daughter of one of the other Robert Baldwins.

Hi Paul, you just brougt that daughter to my attention. My eyes have been crossing updating the profiles for both Robert and his wife. These early profiles are very demanding and I need to pay close attention. NONE of the sources that I cited list an older daughter...only Anne (as spelled in resources). I will eventually get to her profile. I just took a quick peek at Jane and only the father is listed, no mother. She is not listed as residing in either Bucks or Herts. She likely is the daughter of the other Robert Baldwin. Right now, I have so many other pre-1500 Bucks Baldwins that need sourcing, I will contact someone from the England Team to see if they can help with Jane. Great catch, Paul! Thank you! Carol

I just disconnected Robert of Bucks and replaced him with Robert of Berkshire. The other PM can sort out the Tyrrell ancestry. Anne Baldwin is PGM and is listed as the only child of Robert and Joane (Robinson) Baldwin. Her profile needs work and I will do that tomorrow (well, today already is tomorrow. It's past midnight here). Thank you again, Carol
