Mary Brisccoe Baldwin never married.
Mary Briscoe Baldwin, daughter of Dr. Cornelius Baldwin and Nelly Conway nee Hite, was born May 20, 1811 at Bell Grove, Virginia. She was a child of remarkable intelligence and was credited with reason and great originality. She took teaching position at Miss Sheffy’s select boarding school in Staunton. Later she was offered a position as an assistant forthe Board of Foreign Missions. She set off for this position in Greece and worked there from 1863 until 1867. Her nephew Hon J. Baldwin Hay was appointed Vice Consul from the United States to Jaffa, the only seaport of Palestine. He started a school for boys in Jaffa and then was appointed Consul General of Syria. Since the school was without supervision She decided she could be of more help at the school then in Athens. So she applied to the Board of mission for a transfer to Joppa. It was approved and she worked there from 1869 until her death in 1877. She spent 42 years in active work in foreign missions among the Athenians, Cretans, and Arabs. She was buried in the Greek Church Cemetery at Joppa. [1]
Her brother Dr. I. Hite Baldwin Sr, in the United States Navy, erected a marble monument for her.
