Biography

Jannetje Barents was a daughter of Barent Baltus, apparently born at Haerlam in the Netherlands in about 1639.

She was married in 1659 to Jan Guisthout (also known as Quisthout) van der Linden; they announced their intentions to marry at Manhattan, New Amsterdam, New Netherland, on 22 January 1659. The record describes him as "van Brussel" and her as "van Haerlam."[1]

Their first child, Jan, was presented for baptism in Manhattan on 18 January 1660. Witnesses were Arent Juriaenszen, landsman, and Cathalyntje Barents. Later records identify this child as Jan Quisthout.[2]

Her husband Jan Guisthout died before 11 January 1661. On that date, Jannetje, who apparently had traveled back to the Netherlands, was recorded as the widow of Jan Quisthout on the passenger list for a westbound voyage of De Gulden Arent. She married Jan Pieterszen van Goestorp (later recorded as Jan Pieterszen, Jan Soet, and Jan Pieterszen Bosch) as her second husband in Manhattan on 20 October 1663; the marriage record calls her a widow. [3]

Seven children are recorded from Jannetje's marriage to Jan Pieterszen: [4]

  1. Pieter 1664 Oct 19; Jan Pieterszen, Jan Barents; Pieter; Willem Abrahamszen, Saertie Barents
  2. Barent - see Bosch-367 1667 Jan 02; Jan Pieterszen, Jannetie Barents; Barent; Jan Harberding, Mayken Barents
  3. Balthus, apparently died young
  4. Annatje - 1670 Oct 22; Jan Pieterszen, Jannetie Barents; Annetje; Balthus Barentszen, Marritje ten Eyck [5]
  5. Sara 1672 Nov 17; Jan Soet [Jan Pieterszen Bosch?], Jannetie Barents; Sara; Robbert Sanderson, Elsje Barents
  6. Mayken 1675 Feb 10; Jan Pietersz Bosch, Jannetje Barents; Mayken; Jan Harberding, Hendrickje Jans
  7. Balthus

When the first four children were baptized, their father was identified with his patronymic name of Pieterszen, but all of these children were subsequently identified by the last name of Bosch. [6]
