Biography

Steve was born in Cotuit, in Cape Cod, while his father was the pastor of a church there. The family later moved with his assignments to churches in Salem, Mass., Jeffersonville, Vermont, and finally Worcester, Mass.

His sister Rebecca recorded with the picture above:

Every year for Christmas we got some piece of sport equipment. Here we are with our snow shoes. ... On the upper left just barely showing is our school. It was for grades 1 to 12. High school rooms were upstairs except home economics, which was on the first floor. In those years it was thought to be good to have your tonsils out. Doctors and nurses came to our village & used the home ec. room as an operating room. Steve and I were done.

Rebecca recalled when they moved from Vermont:

"I well remember our move! ... We girls stayed with our Aunt Mill while Steve and our parents went to Worcester to see to the furniture and all that stuff. Steve ran upstairs and laid claim to the first room he entered. He got it but it was not a good choice -- not any heat and on the north side!"

As a young man, Stephen raised rabbits.

He graduated from North High School, and attended Alfred College, where he met his future wife, Marion E. Phillips. He got his degree in 1937.

According to Becky (Nally) Syphers, "Uncle Steve Bartlett was a WWII veteran ... He fought in Europe - North Africa, Italy, D-Day. He was in the 9th Division. After the war he was permanently shell-shocked. He never spoke about his experiences." An article in the Worcester Telegram announcing his engagement stated that Steve was with 15th engineers, 9th division. He served for 5 years in Africa, Sicily, Normandy, and Germany. He was awarded 7 battle stars.

Stephen lived in Worcester until about 1964, when he and his family moved to a farm in Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania.
