Rodney Dietert has contributed the following information - thank you, Rodney! More will follow....... Moses Bass Update Jan. 2006:
I have tried to glean more information some direct from census and marriage records as well as incorporating some uncorroborated information from others research sites (hence, please use caution). I wanted to send this out hoping other Bass relatives might correct and/or extend the information as possible to help us build a more complete picture of the Bass migrations and continuing family contacts over the decades.
What I think we know: Families that interconnect with our Basses in Chatham, Surry and Lawrence Co. as next door neighbors and or relatives: (I am listing neighbors since these usually mattered a lot in those days and many were relatives given proximity of farms.) Many of these families seemed to migrate together.
Henry Horn, John Bond, Stephen and other Hobson, James Moon, Samuel, Carter, William and Martin McBride, several Marshall members, several Vestill (Vestall) members, Bray, Hinshaw, Terry, Doan, numerous Gargus members, Wooton, Bills (Biles), Shugart, several Davis members, Landreth, Blackwell, White, Evans, Benjamin Kemp, Nimrod and other Fenders, Edwards, Briant, Cox, Toliver, Burton, Conley, Dobbs:
1730s
Old Aaron as well as some of his brothers lived around the Bass Swamp area of what was Dobbs and later Wayne Co., NC. They had to be relatively close to Col. Stephen Cobbs property given letter making that reference. Aarons offspring were at a minimum:
1778-79
Moses Bass was granted 200 acres on 23 December, 1778 on the Long Branch, running/ beginning on both sides of Henry Horns line. (Henry Horn was a major Quaker in Dobbs.) This property was around Black Creek in Dobbs Co. (probably now Wayne). Horns line was south of Contentnea Creek.
Aaron Bass granted 400 acres on January 1, 1779 (a week after Moses) beginning at William Ridges line and joining Robert Sims and Edward Hoods lines.
Sometime between 1779 and 1781, Moses, Edward and Aaron moved to the Cane Creek area of Chatham Co., NC.
1780's
About 1781, Edward married Hannah Moon, a Quaker. Her Friends membership was negated with this marriage out of unity.
Moses should have married Catherine ? about 1782-1785 while living in Chatham County. Chances are she was a reasonably close neighbor and/or the family went to the same church. We do not know if she had a Dobbs County connection.
1790's
Chatham Co:

Edward and Moses moved to Surry County where they first appear in the 1793 Surry County Tax list. Aaron continues to own property in Chatham in the 1800 and 1810 censuses. But it is likely that was a plantation and Aaron may be living elsewhere. WHERE???

Other Normans family members married both Cockerhams and Bills and migrated to Lawrence Co., Indiana.

1840's Schuyler County, Missouri Bass marriages:
John C. Bass married Sopha (Sophia) A. Tobin on 27 January, 1848 in Schuyler County, Missouri. This may explain the later migration to Co., MO in part!!! Sophia is likely the daughter of George and Eliza Tobin, both born in Kentucky, but living in Schuyler in the 1850 census.

Lewis Norvell Bass (b. 1832, son of Moses II) married Lavina Ellis (b. 1828, Rowan County, probably the daughter of Joel Ellis, North Carolina and later Kentucky) in Lawrence Count., Indiana, September, 1850
Many Basses moved from Indiana and Illinois to Schuyler County, Missouri before 1860. John Bass moved between 1850 and 1852 (Lucinda, born in Indiana, but Benjamin, born in Missouri, and Lewis N. Bass moved about 1852, between the birth of Moses Jasper (1851) and the second child in 1853). Moses Bass II was there about 1853 (when his son John H. was born) having moved from Coles County,. Illinois.
The family of Edward Bass II, formerly based in Owen County, Indiana, migrated to Boone County, Iowa (near Des Moines) during the 1850's. They were certainly there by 1856 since Edwards son, James, married an Iowa woman in February, 1857.
The family of Aaron and Malinda and children migrated from Surry County (and Ashe), North Carolina to Hawkins County, Tennessee, apparently during the mid 1850's.
