Andrew Bass is said to have been born on June 9, 1698, probably the son of Richard Basse and Jane Bryant. His wife's name is said to be Elizabeth Smith. He is the key figure in this story, because around 1730 or shortly thereafter he moved from Nansemond to the southern part of what is now Wilson County, North Carolina. He received repeated land grants in the area, until eventually he owned more than 5000 acres.
(Wilson is one of North Carolina's youngest counties, formed in 1855. When Andrew first lived there he was in Craven County. Subsequently, his land was in Johnston County (from 1746), the long-vanished Dobbs County (from 1759), and Wayne County (from 1779 to 1855).)
Andrew Bass's will was proved in Dobbs County Court in March 1770. It mentions only three children, sons Richard and Andrew and daughter Anne.
Andrew, son of Richard Basse and Jane Bryant, was born 9 June 1698 in Norfolk County, Virginia Colony.[1] He passed away between 22 January 1770 (date of will) and March 1770 (date of probate) in Craven County, North Carolina.[2]
Andrew married Elizabeth Smith about 1728, probably in Norfolk County, Virginia Colony. The had three known children who were named in will and/or land transactions: Richard Bass (c 1730-c 1792) md Sarah McKinnie; Ann Bass (c 1735- ) md Richard Blackledge; Andrew Bass (c 1740-1791) md Ann Unknown.
Andrew acquired considerable property in North Carolina Colony:[1]
The North Carolina Tax List 1763-1835 lists Andrew Basse Sr. with 5,770 acres and 12 black slaves.
Andrew apparently had quite an affection for his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Richard Blackledge. He made gifts of land and other property to Richard during his lifetime.
On 24 November 1767 "Andrew Bass Sr. of Dobbs Co., Planter, for 5 shillings paid by son Richard Bass, & Richard Blackledge, son-inlaw, grants them all the rest & residue of my goods, chattles, and personal estate for each's behoof and in trust for his children."[4]
On the same date, "Andrew Bass Sr. of Dobbs Co., Planter for love and affection (gift) to oldest son Richard Bass and his children: Edward, Andrew, Uriah, Elizabeth and Sarah .... all the lands lying to the westward of the Great Branch including the plantation I now dwell and reside." In addition he gave son Richard one slave and 1/4 of his cattle; gifts of negroes to Richard's sons (Edward, Andrew and Uriah); gifts of feather bed & furniture to Richard's daughters (Elizabeth and Sarah).[5]
In 1769 Andrew Bass is listed on the North Carolina Census Index, 1790-1890, in Dobbs County.[6]
Andrew's will dated 22 January 1770 and probated March 1770 Court, Craven County, names sons Richard, Jr. (Jr. indicates "the younger," he had a living uncle Richard, Sr.) and Andrew, Jr.; son-in-law Richard Blackledge; grandsons Uriah Bass, Andrew Bass, Thomas Blackledge, William Blackledge, and Richard Blackledge. No mention is made of Andrew's wife, Elizabeth, in the will or any of the deeds of gift to his children. Her date of death is unknown but presumed to have occurred before about 1754
YDNA haplogroup is R-S1051 as determined by testing of his 7 x great grandson
