With Garibald the documentary evidence for the early Bavarian dukes becomes clearer. Still, there is no record of his parents, assumed descent from Theodo II seems to be based entirely on him following Theodo in the Series Ducum Bavariae. Indications for a Frankish origin are found in Fredegar's Chronicle calling his children "ex genere Francorum".[2] He married Walderada from the Lethinger dynasty of the Langobards[3][4] after 555, the year her first husband died.[5] He lost his duchy in the early 590s when the king of Austrasia Childebert replaced him with Tassilo I.[6][7] Nothing is known about his fate and it is assumed he died about 593.[8]
