Biography

Garibald I (Agilofing) von Bayern has German Roots.

Due to the paucity of early Bavarian documents there is considerable uncertainty about the early dukes of Bavaria, not only their relationship to each other but even their names and order of succession. The mid-13th century Series Ducum Bavariae lists, in order, the dukes from 514 as

  • Theodo dux primus.
  • Theodo II.
  • Garibaldus rex.
  • Tassilo dux.
  • Theodo III, quem sanctus Ruodbertus baptizavit.
  • Theodebertus.
  • Theodo IV, qui cum filiis sanctum Corbiniacum locavit Frisinge.
  • Theodaldus dux.
  • Grimoaldus dux.
  • Hugpertus dux.
  • Udilo dux cum Theodone frater.
  • Thassilo dux II.[1]

With Garibald the documentary evidence for the early Bavarian dukes becomes clearer. Still, there is no record of his parents, assumed descent from Theodo II seems to be based entirely on him following Theodo in the Series Ducum Bavariae. Indications for a Frankish origin are found in Fredegar's Chronicle calling his children "ex genere Francorum".[2] He married Walderada from the Lethinger dynasty of the Langobards[3][4] after 555, the year her first husband died.[5] He lost his duchy in the early 590s when the king of Austrasia Childebert replaced him with Tassilo I.[6][7] Nothing is known about his fate and it is assumed he died about 593.[8]

The chronology and parentage of the early Dukes of Bavaria is impossible now to discern; to link them in WikiTree would in my (Roger Travis) opinion be irresponsible. See the family-name Bayern and the category for a list of them.[9]

Recommended TO DO:
  • Detach Garibald from alleged father Theodald, due to lack of proof (see Cawley, 2006).[1]

Bayern-11 and De Agilofinges-18 are not ready to be merged because: There are discrepancies in siblings, parentage, and offspring.
