In 1611 Joan inherited Ruardean from her father, Thomas. John and Joan were Roman Catholics and John was outlawed and the manors he held in Joan's right were confiscated in 1612. Joan recovered her estates but clung to her faith and was convicted of recusancy in 1619, and widowed later that year. She was imprisoned at Gloucester for treason in 1641. [1] Joan was living at Ruardean in 1642.
