Biography

Charles Beall was a Marylander.

[1]

Charles Beall was named in a large number of documents. Documents of Charles Beall's which do not appear crucial to his biography may be found in Additional Charles Beall Documents

1673 Birth and Parents

In a petition of 3 Dec 1734 by Joyce Bradford regarding the boundaries of Plain Dealing Charles Beall gave a deposition in which he gave his age as about 61 years. [2] This would place his birth as about 1673.

Fielder M. M. Beall placed the birth of Captain Charles Beall, in Calvert County in 1672. [3] son of Col. Ninian Beall [1626], Immigrant,

Possibly the same Charles Beall, born 1673 (age 59 in 1732 and 61 in 1734 when deponent in PG Co. Court Cases, [4]

Charles Beall was born about 1672 in Calvert County Maryland. He was the son of Col. Ninian Beall, born about 1625 in Dumbarton, Fifeshire, Scotland. He died 28 Feb 1717, "Rock of Dumbarton" Prince George's County, Maryland - Probate [5]

Residence

He "lived on the east side of the Eastern Branch, or Anacostia River. His first home appears to have been on Bachelors Hope, on Oxon Run, in Prince George's County and partially in what is now the District of Columbia."

1704 Indian Ranger

On Jan 21 1704 Charles Beall was commissioned Commander of Indian Rangers for the Indian War [7].

Feb 21 1704 brought Col. Ninian Beall brought in a stray Indian and said his son Charles Beall, who comands the Rangers, had captured him. [7]

1704 Presbyterian Church Leadership

Nov 20, 1704 named by father, among others, as trustee of Church in his deed of gift [8]

On November 20, 1704, Col. Ninian Beall deeded a half acre of land out of a tract called Meddows located on the Western Branch of the Patuxent River in Prince George's County, to Rev. Nathaniel Taylor, Presbyterian Minister, for erection of a church. [9] Trustees named in the deed include Alexander Beall and a James Beall, believed to be Alexander's brother. The deed was witnessed by Samuel Magruder. [9]

The presence of a Church of Scotland minister and the publicly recorded deed of Ninian Beall for a Presbyterian church identifying several Presbyterians by name, evidence the relaxation of the religious intolerance of the Maryland Assembly of 1692 which restricted religious worship to the Anglican Church. As a consequence of that Assembly Act there were few Presbyterians in Maryland, and they self-restrained in open worship. [9]

1706 Father Deeds Land to Charles

Jul 15 1706, father Col. Ninian Beall deeds to son Charles Bachelors Hope, 440 acres, originally patented by father [11] [12] "Charles Beall bought lands in (now) Montgomery in 1715, 1718, 1719, 1720, and 1726. amounting to several thousand acres [13] [14] [15] Charles Beall married first Mary Walstead, b. ca 1675, d. ca 1710. [12]. She was the widow of Joshua Walstead and made a return for her husband Joshua's estate in 1695 [16] Fielder Beall and J. Ninian Beall believe the marriage took place ca 1695. This is plausable, as Mary Walstead was a widow by that time, and fits the theory that son Ninian the elder, born1696, was their child; however the 1709 record would appear to negate their theory.

Marshall also states that on 23 September 1709 Charles married Mary Walstead, born 1673, Calvert County, Maryland, d. Abt 1714, Prince George's County, Maryland (Age 41 [5]

1712 Second Marriage: Mary Price

Charles married secondly about 1712 Mary Price (b. ca 1690, dau of Edward Price of Prince George's County. [14]; She died about 1767 [12]

Alternately, according to Marshall, it was In 1715 in Prince George's County, that Charles married Mary Price, born about 1699, Prince George's County, Maryland d. 10 Sep 1773, Charles County, Maryland - inventory [5]

Children who are definitely not a child of Charles Beall

  1. Ninian Beall the Elder sometimes shown as a child of Charles Beall and Mary Walstead, was born in 1696 in Prince George Co., MD. He died in 1780. He was said to be the son of Charles Beall and Mary Walstead, widow of Joshua Walstead. [2] married (1) CALLET RAWLINGS. She was born in 1696. Ninian, b. 1696, the elder, d. 1780. m.
