Biography

Samuel E Beaman was a native of Indiana.[1]He was raised in Owen County and lived there until sometime between 1850 and 1860. In 1850 he lived in dwelling number 486, amongst others who were certainly his relatives. In the household 485, was Noah and Mary Randle. Mary is most likely, Samuel's mother living with her 2nd husband. In the household 483 an 8-year-old named Lavinia Beaman lived with Lewis and Grisella Hill. In the household immediately after his (no. 487) lived Bryant and Disa A Beaman, with a 7-month-old girl named Mary E Beaman and a 73 year-old woman named Catherine Langdon.

By that time he had migrated west and the 1860 census taker found him living in the town of Macon, Missouri with a woman, identified only as "M" and what appear to be his children and hers from a previous marriage or children that could be their nieces (Mary Frances, Martha Ellen and Nancy A Gall).

Timeline with Research Notes

1850 Census: In 1850, Samuel Beaman lived in District 84, Morgan Township, Owen County, Indiana.[2] He is 21 years old and indicates that he was born in Indiana. The other people living with him are 3 teenaged girls and a young boy, who was 4 years old.

1860 Census: In 1860, Samuel Beaman lived in Macon, Macon County, Missouri.[3] Also in this household is a female, Mariah Beaman, who about his age (30 years). There is an infant girl (aged 2), Lavina, and a young boy (aged 4), Benjamin F. Then the next 3 girls listed and Mary F, Martha E and Nancy A Gall, ages 11, 8 and 6 years. The oldest of the Gall girls was born in Ohio where the woman was born, but the 2 younger Galls were born in Iowa. The 2 youngest children in the household, carrying the Beaman surname were born in Missouri.

08 April 1862: Enlisted in Missouri State Militia as a private in the Cavalry, Company K, Regiment 1.[4]

07 April 1865: Discharged from the Missouri State Militia.[4]

1870 Census: In 1870, Samuel and Mariah Beaman lived in Bourbon County, Kansas.[5] The Gall girls no longer lived with Samuel and Mariah. They will be discussed on the pages set up for them on WikiTree. There are 3 Beaman children in their household, Benj. Frank (aged 13 years), Laura A (aged 10 years) and Amanda (aged 2 years). There is a gap of 8 years between the 2 girls. We know that Samuel E Beaman served for 3 years during the Civil War. There are several possible reasons for the gap between the girls. First of all, Samuel was probably absent from home between April 1862 and April 1865. It is possible that besides the time he was absent, Mariah may have lost another child between the girls; Samuel may have been ill after returning from the War or Mariah may have been ill.

1880 Census: In 1880, Samuel Beaman lived in Livingston County, Missouri with his son Frank Beaman.[1]

1890 Census (Veteran's Schedule: Fortunately, the 1890 veterans schedule listing Samuel E Beaman survived and is available online.[4] This record indicates that Samuel Beaman of Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri, served as a private in cavalry of the Missouri State Militia, Company K, Regiment 1. He enlisted on 08 April 1862 and was discharged on 07 April 1865.[4]

28 October 1892: Death of Samuel E Beaman in Jamesport, Missouri. According to the death notice his funeral was held the next day at the Gee's Creek Church.[6] Although, the cards for Headstones of Union Civil War Soldiers indicates that he was buried at the IOOF cemetery at Jamesport, Missouri there is no visible headstone remaining in that cemetery for Samuel E Beaman. Note: Sharlene Miller walked entire cemetery looking for this stone and did not find one there in 2012. It may be possible that instead of burying him in Jamesport, he was actually buried at Gee's Creek Cemetery.
