Nancy Bean was born December 8, 1821 in the Cherokee Nation (East), the daughter of John Bean a white man and Ruth Starr, a Cherokee and great-granddaughter of Nancy Ward. Around 1834, the family removed to Washington County, Arkansas, and from there to the "Flint District" in Indian Territory as "Old Settlers."[1] She had two children; Hulbert Bean with her cousin Ellis Starr, and Narcissa Bean possibly with Benjamin Goss, her sister's husband. Ellis Starr died about the time that Hulbert was born. Nancy and Hulbert are listed on the "Old Settler" roll living near her mother and siblings in the Flint District. [2] Nancy appears on the 1880 Cherokee census, living in Illinois District with Hulbert and his family. [3] Nancy died September 28, 1887. [4]
