Biography

Roger Beauchamp, a younger son of Walter de Beauchamp and Alice de Toeni,[1] was "evidently born before 1285."[2][3]

Youth and Clergy

As a youth he was placed in the church. In 1298 the Convent of Gloucester and Abbot John de Gamage agreed to pay Roger, son of Sir Walter de Beauchamp, 40s. annually until they preferred him to a benefice worth forty marks or more yearly.[1]

By the terms of the 1303 will of his father, he appears to have inherited a bequest of 200 marks for the purpose of making a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. This same legacy had earlier been left to his father, Walter de Beauchamp, Knt, by the will of his father, William de Beauchamp (died 1269) of Elleey, Worcestershire. [1]

Marriage and Issue

It appears that Roger eventually left the church and married an unidentified wife. They had one son, Roger, "born say 1315". Their son, Roger Beauchamp, Knt., 1st Lord Beauchamp of Bletsoe, married before 1337.[2]

1316 Land at Powick

In 1316 he was granted land at Powick, Worcestershire for life by Richard de Tony.[1]

Death

Sir Roger de Beauchamp probably died before 1320 (date of charter naming his parents' three sons then known to be living, i.e., Walter, William and Giles,[1] and excluding Roger).

  3. Estimated birth year: "After 1290" based on older brothers, including William born c1288. It was changed 18 August 2020 from "about 1273", which had been based on the assumption that he was 25 in 1298, noting that his birth "before 1285" given by Richardson in 2011's Magna Carta Ancestry was not in 2013's Royal Ancestry. However, the birth year estimate of 1273 does not work with his mother's birth year estimate (1265). His parents had seven sons, and their 2nd son William was "age 40 in 1328" (Royal Ancestry, volume IV, page 412 POWICK 9.iii). Their son Roger's entry (Royal Ancestry, volume IV, page 523 SAINT JOHN 10) credits him with a son named Roger who had previously been attributed to his older brother Giles (see the footnote on page 524; Giles' entry, POWICK 10, does not include a birth year but calls him 5th son of Walter and Alice).

Magna Carta Project

Roger Beauchamp appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestors Elizabeth and Thomas Boteler/Butler to Magna Carta Surety Baron Henry de Bohun (vol. I, pages 218-220 BLETSOE). The trail from Elizabeth to Bohun was badged by the Magna Carta Project in September 2019 by Noland-165 and Thomas's in 2020. The trail is outlined in the Magna Carta Trails section of Elizabeth Boteler's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Isaac - Primary sources are always welcome, but the trail that Gordon posted about was badged 6 September 2019 (as noted in the #Magna Carta Project section of the profile).

Ahoy Gordon, Jack et al on the Magna Carta working group, what's the current status of and plan for this profile?

I see a multi-year history below in the public comments on this profile saying it's under review and/or being worked on etc.

Is it now done-ish, and this is as good as it gets given lack of primary sources? Or (hopefully!) can we hope for contemporary primary sources or other secondary sources to corroborate Richardson, viz. an identity for his (presumable) wife; some evidence he's the link between his (nominal) father and son; his land, and inheritances etc?

For example, is he explicitly named in his father's will, regarding the 200 marks for pilgrimage to Jerusalem? Where did Richardson find this will? Can we find it, and cite it directly?

Thanks

Andrea, the Roger you have described in your note refers to Beauchamp-203, but not to Beuachamb-1408. The two Rogers have different fathers and their births are an entire generation apart. In fact, one Roger is the father of the other.
