Biography

Name

Bernhard (Bernard) is named first in a list of the three sons of Pippin, the son of Bernhard, the son of Pippin, King of Italy in the Chronicle of Regino of Prüm for the year 818. Bernhardus filius Pippini, rex Italiae ... Habuit autem iste Bernhardus filium nomine Pippinum, qui tres liberos genuit, Bernhardum, Pippinum et Heribertum.[1]

845 Birth

Bernhard I was born in Vermandois. [2]

Bernard lived from about 845 to before 893 [3]

His birth date is given as circa 845 [4] [5]

Parentage

Regino names (in order) "Bernardum, Pippinum et Heribertum" as the three children of "Pippinum" [3]

Italy

According to Italian authors, Bernard went to Italy and was the ancestor of the Bernardhengi. Settipani is sceptical about this, particularly as the names Pepin and Heribert are not found among the alleged descendants. Settipani suggests that comte Bernard may be the same Bernard who is recorded as one of the executors of Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks in 877 and in that capacity donated property to Sainte-Marie de Laon. [3]

Count of Laon

He may be the same person as a Bernhard, mentioned as count near Laon 877-878,[4]; [5]

He served as count of Laon [6][7].

Other Details

Settipany suggests that comte Bernard may be the same Bernard who is recorded as one of the executors of Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks in 877: "Adelelm et Bernard comtes de la region du Laonnais" donated property to Sainte-Marie de Laon as executors of the testament of Charles II "le Chauve" King of the Franks[676]. [3]

Nothing more is known about him. [8]

877 Death

He is not named with his two brothers in the Annales Bertiniani in 877 which may suggest that he had died before that date.[9]
