2nd Lieutenant John Black served with Capt. Nathaniel Fales' Company, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

JOHN BLACK [1] born Apr 14, 1736 at York, York, Maine;[2][3]

He married Abigail Watson daughter of Shadrack Watson and Susanna Kimball, circa 1763;

He died Apr, 1832 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; [4]

      In 1758, John Black, Corporal, is recorded as serving in the York militia in Colonel Jedediah Preble's company under Captain James Gowen of Kittery. John Black served in the Revolutionary War. John and Abigail were one of the three first families to settle on Naskeag Point in the spring of 1763.

On Jun 27, 1860, Ruth Black resided at Penobscot, Hancock, Maine; Ruth age 93 and her son Reuben , 53 farmer, were residing in the household of Daniel Wight, 62, and Abigail age 58, in 1860; 1860 Federal Census.
  • ii. ELIZABETH; born 1763 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; married Joseph Freethy, son of Joseph Freethy and Elisabeth Banks; died Feb 27, 1860 at Brooklin, Hancock, Maine; Æ about 104; [6] According to the 1910 Register of Sedgwick, Elizabeth Black was the first white child born in Sedgwick; [7]She appeared on the census of Aug 19, 1850 at Brooklin, Hancock, Maine.
  • iii. SAMUEL b. 1765 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; Mrs. Rebecca Annes of Annes Island and Mr. Samuel Black of Sedgwick were pub. April 1 1790 by Joshua Snow, Town Clerk, forbidden by Susanna Lee Crow; m. Rebecca Annis, daughter of Rolfe Annis and Sarah Rawlins, 19 May 1790 at Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine; d. 21 Feb 1862..

He owned a water driven mill on the outlet of Blacks Pond. The mill was near where the younger Joab lived. From Walter Snow: It is tradition among member of this branch of the Black family that several of Captain Black's children were lured by the gold rush in the 1850's and went to California."
