Biography

Humphrey was born on 10 September 1304 at Knaresborough Castle, Yorkshire.[1] His mother was churched on 11 October 1304.[2] The Wardrobe Accounts for 30 October in the regnal year 1303/4 (1304 in modern reckoning) record a payment to "Robert le Norreys, a servant of the Lady Elizabeth, Countess of Hereford, for bringing news to the Prince of the birth of the 1st son of the said Countess."[3][4] Unfortunately, by this date he had already died at Fulham, Middlesex, on 28 October 1304.[2] He was buried at Westminster Abbey on 8 November 1304.[2]

Research Notes

Alison Weir in Britain's Royal Families gives his dates as about 1303 to 1305 and his first name as "Hugh or Humphrey".[5] Flores Historiarum gives his first name as Hugh (ablative "Hugone" in its Latin).[6] Other sources, including the cartularies of Walden and Llanthony Abbeys[1], just have Humphrey as his first name.

Douglas Richardson gives the birth date as before 30 October 1303, mentioning a record in the Wardrobe Accounts for a payment to Roger le Norreys for bringing news of his birth.[4] Cartulary evidence makes it clear that it was 1304 when Humphrey was born[1], and the payment was therefore made in the regnal year 1303/4, which ended on 19 November 1304.

Mary Anne Everett Green, in her Lives of the Princesses of England, suggests a birth date of 1306[7] but that is clearly wrong.

Douglas Richardson gives Humphrey's burial place as Westminster Abbey.[4] T Anna Leese in her Blood Royal states that it was Walden Priory, Essex[8] but that is wrong: there are records for both his burial at Westminster Abbey and for that of his sister Margaret in the same tomb.[2]

I have proposed a merge with Humphrey de Bohun. The two profiles are clear duplicates.

In a series of edits I have added sources and discussion of his dates. I have proposed a merge with Hugh de Bohun.

Bohun-124 and Bohun-38 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, same parents. The only source I have found for Hugh de Bohun, Bohun-124, Alison Weir's Britain's Royal Families (which is the source cited on thepeerage.com) gives the first name as "Hugh or Humphrey". Other sources have Humphrey as in Bohun-38.

I suspect Humphrey and the person shown currently on Wikitree as his brother Hugh are duplicates. The only source I have found for Hugh's existence is Alison Weir's Britain's Royal Families (2008 Vintage Books edition p.85) and there she gives the first name as "Hugh or Humphrey".

Hugh is not listed in Douglas Richardson or MEDLANDS or T Anna Leese's Blood Royal or his parents' Wikipedia articles. He has an entry on thepeerage.com but with just one source - Alison Weir's Britain's Royal Families. Alison Weir (p.85) gives his first name as "Hugh or Humphrey", which suggests this profile may be a duplicate of Humphrey Bohun d.y..
