Biography

European Aristocracy
Sir Richard Bold was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Syr Rychard Bowld, Knyght[1] alias Sir Richard Bold of Bold, knt,[2] Ricardus Bold de Bold, miles[3]

Richard was probably born at Bold, Lancashire, where the Bold family of Bold [Bowld], "settled from time immemorial on the estate which gave them their name" and which they held from the lords of Warrington.[1] Bold is in the parish of Prescot.[1]

Richard was the son and heir of Sir Henry Bold, knight, who was married in 1464 to Dulcia or Dowse Savage, the daughter of Sir John Savage, but in 1497 the name of his widow was Ellen.[4]

"Vis. of Lancs., 1664/5," asserts that Catherine was the wife of Richard's grandfather, Richard; Dulcia was the mother of Henry's children; and Elena was Henry's relict.[5]

Richard was the brother of:

  1. Tuger, purchased Eccleston and other manors in Lancashire, and Harleton in Bucks.;[4]
  2. Matilda
  3. Catherine
  4. Maud
  5. Roger

Marriage and Children

Richard married Margaret Butler.[1] [2] [3] Margaret was one of the daughters of Sir Thomas Butler of Bewsey, knight,[1] [3] baron of Warrington.[2]

The marriage covenant was arranged by Richard's grandfather Sir Richard Bold, in 1483, and they were to be married within thirteen years.[4] Margaret was born about 1469. Richard and Margaret married about 1496 at Bold, Lancashire.

Richard and Margaret had children:

  1. Property

Richard acquired other lands in Bold and sold some in Flintshire.[4]

Occupation

Richard was knighted between 1500 and 1506, as in 1499 he was an esquire.[4] In 1505, he was appointed seneschal of West Derby wapentake.[4]

Death

Sir Richard Bold, knight, died on 16 November 1528 (20 Henry VIII[3]), survived by his widow Margaret, four sons and five daughters. He was succeeded by his eldest son Richard.[4] Margaret was living 1553.

His Inquisition post mortem recites his will and found that:[4]

  • Sir Richard's father's widow, Ellen was still living in 1527 as the wife of James Clarell, and had an annuity of £21;
  • Ellen had a son John Bold with lands in Bold and Widnes;
  • Sir Richard provided for 300 marks for the marriage portion of each of his daughters:
  • Sir Richard provided for an annuity of £4 for each of his sons who should be sent to grammar school and then university;
  • his body was to be buried in Farnworth church near his father and mother; and
  • as his heirs, he named his four sons in birth order: Richard; Thomas; John; and Francis, his brother Tuger, and the right heirs of the body of Sir Henry Bold, knight, his great-grandfather.

Research Notes

During the heraldic visitation of Lancashire in 1567, William Flower recorded Richard's parents as Sir Henry Bolde of Bolde and his wife, Catherine, daughter of Richard Bolde of Chester.[2] Richard St George recorded the same parents when he conducted a visitation of Lancashire in 1613.[3] Henry flourished during the reign of King Edward IV of England which was 1461-1483,[2] and was living in 2 Henry VII,[3] 22 August 1486-21 August 1487.

Richard was born about 1500. He passed away in 1532.

There is conflicting stories of whom Richard Bold married ... Some deocuments claim it to be Elizabeth Boteler. and other Margaret Boteler... Does anyone know for certain which is the correct one?

Bold-432 and Bold-23 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person!

The given marriage date of 1515 is after the birth of 5-6 children and contradicts the biography date of c. 1496. I assume 1515 was put there to account for the obviously incorrect birth year of his wife, who would not have married at age 1 and had a child at age 6. See the notes on her husband's profile.

Bould-24 and Bold-23 appear to represent the same person because: Same daughter. Use LNAB Bold and suggest merge into details in Bold-23. Thanks
