Biography

John Bondurant Sr was a son of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

John Bondurant was born Oct 1, 1709 in King William Parish, Henrico Shire, Virginia. (This information is from a FindAGrave site that is filled with incorrect information - see research notes below).

He did NOT marry Sarah Rachael Moseley about 1729 or 1736 as was long accepted. She was the widow of Robert Moseley & never married again, & died about 1738 in Henrico County, Virginia.[1]

John did marry Sarah ______ before 1757. She was a witness to the 1757 will of Richard Epperson as Sarah Bondurant, and also signed her relinquishment of dower when John traded land with Thomas Turpin, Jr. 1758 & 1759. (These transactions are recorded in Cumberland Co.,VA, Deed Book 2, p 518 & in Albemarle Co. VA (later Buckingham Co.) Court Order Book 4, p 123.)

John died circa 1774 in Buckingham Co., Virginia. John Bondurant was listed as a vestryman in King William Parish in 1748. He is first mentioned in his father's will in 1734. John and his wife Sarah lived in Goochland County, Virginia, and later in Cumberland County. He deeded 200 acres of land to his son, John Peter Bondurant of Albemarle County, on 9 March 1758.

Grinnell, in his manuscript, indicates that John died in Manakin Town, Goochland County, Virginia, in 1744. A pedigree chart in The Huguenot, Publication No. 30, submitted by Mary V. Bondurant Epling, indicates that John died about 1744 in Buckingham County, but before 1776, and that his death was recorded in Powhatten County. A GEDCOM received from Ruby Talley Smith indicated he died in 1774.

Research Notes on Sarah: See the Bondurant Family Association newsletter #128 (Winter 2020) for Amy Warren Sanders' research to prove that John Bondurant never married the widow Sarah Rachel Taylor Moseley. The misinformation came from the original research [2] which was later disproved. [4]

The Bondurant Family Association Newsletter reprinted information from The Huguenot Magazine, Vol. 25, page 173 which gives the marriage date as 1836 but the date and place were not proved.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

This man was not called JOHN PETER. He was just John son of Jean Pierre Bondurant & Ann Tanner.

He also did NOT marry Sarah Rachel Taylor Moseley, widow of Robert Moseley. See the Bondurant Family Association newsletter #128 for discussion of proofs that this relationship did not take place. (www.bondurant-family.org/newsletters/

Eve, I agree with you. Also, Jean Pierre Bondurant's will states that he gives each son land: John, Peter and Joseph. Then he gives Peter some clothes and household goods. Peter was the youngest and is still under the authority of his mother, There isn't any son named John Peter, or Peter jacob. Mary Bondurant Warren researched her book thoroughly and she says there were 3 sons, John, Peter and Joseph. They did not have or ever use middle names. Those were added later by a descendant.

Bondurant-333 and Bondurant-53 do not represent the same person because: The way I read their father's will, Peter Bondurant is a separate person from his brother John Peter Bondurant III. DNA of the two brothers would be similar. I agree they could be the same person, but the will, to me, indicates two different people.
Margaret, as Bettie Coltrane explained above, Jean Pierre & Ann Tanner Bondurant had three sons, Joseph, John & Peter, as well as two daughters Ann & Francoise (Frances). Many transcribers of JPB's 1734 will have missed the comma between the names of sons John & Peter, hence the miscommunication that has gone on for generations.

Bondurant-333 and Bondurant-53 appear to represent the same person because: Jean Pierre and John Peter are the same person - one is Anglicized
