Jacob Bonham is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A011962.

Jacob Bonham was born about 1741-5 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, which was British America at the time. His parents are Amariah Bonham and Mary Drake. [1] [2] [3]

Jacob married Mary Drake. [1] [2]

Near the end of the Revolutionary War, on 18 May 1782, Jacob enlisted in the Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia, into Captain George Brown's Company, as a Sergeant. Brown's Company was under the command of Colonel William Crawford. Crawford was given orders to go into Indian Territory, along the Sandusky River, and hunt down the British and Indian allies, that had been attacking Americans. Colonel Crawford, headed out with about 500 Militiamen, most of them from Pennsylvania, they were called the Crawford Expedition. [1] [2]

On 4 June 1782 the Expedition encountered British and Indian forces, the battles lasted over many days. The Americans were surrounded, and attempted a retreat, the American Militiamen became separated from each other, a large group broke free and made it back to Pennsylvania and other posts, but many were killed, captured, tortured and executed, including Colonel Crawford and Sergeant Jacob Bonham. It is reported that Jacob was killed on 9 June 1782 in Sandusky, Crawford County, Ohio. It was after this battle, and American losses, that the Crawford Expedition became known as the Sandusky Expedition, due to the location of the main battle. Some even called it Crawford's Defeat. Research Notes

  • There are two Jacob Bonham's in the same time period and both had been in the Revolutionary War.; This was posted on the profile when the incorrect spouse had been attached to this profile: "This spouse, Mary Warford , is married to a different Jacob Bonham. Both Jacob Bonhams were soldiers in the Revolutionary war, but are proven in the DAR with differing Ancestor #'s (A011962 vs A011963). The Jacob on this profile lines up with birth and death dates as well as the children. Mary (Polly) Warford shows different children, with a Jacob of different birth and death dates. This Jacob's wife appears to be a Mary Drake. although documentation for her as well as her parents is uncertain at this time. Recommend removing the spouse from this profile.

  • Jul 21, 2022: Well Greg, I agree that folks have been busy creating new relationships there. In my own work at home, I have Jacob Bonham married to Mary Drake. And I am pretty sure he is was in the Washington County Militia, a Sergeant in Captain George Brown's Company. Jacob was killed in 1782 at the Sanducky Expedition, Crawford County, Ohio. I did not know there is another Jacob Bonham that matches, can you tell me the profile ID, I attempted a search but just got bonce back to Bonham-4. I do not recall making Mary Warford his spouse, those are not my profiles, I do see that someone made Ruhama Bonham the daughter of Warford, that could be what started all this? I know that Paul Kester married Ruhama Bonham, Paul was in the war of 1812, and was killed on the way home returning from battle. Virgil M. Kester III.

Bonham-430 and Bonham-67 are not ready to be merged because: different mothers, different places of death.
