Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

The parentage and date and place of birth of Catherine, the wife, first, of William Dehart and, second, of James Ingels, appears to be based mostly on records in family bibles and other family records, rather than any available primary evidence. According to multiple family sources collected by Richard T. Ingalls for "The Shoebox Letters,"[1] as well as other (not necessarily reliable) secondary sources, such as Family Data Collection[2] and FindaGrave,[3] Catherine was Catherine Boone, the daughter of Joseph Boone, Jr. and Elizabeth (Warren) Boone. This parentage is also somewhat supported by the record of an affidavit by Catherine Boone's brother Joseph Boone III in support of a Revolutionary War pension application by William Dehart's brother Samuel Dehart.[4]

Catherine's precise date of birth is uncertain. The "Shoebox Letters" seems to adopt March 11, 1752 as Catherine's date of birth.[5] However, it appears that that date was only supported by one family source,[6] while a different source referenced in the "Shoebox Letters" (an Ingels family bible) showed Catherine's date of death as November 7, 1804 and her age of death as 52 years, 8 months, 6 days, which would mean that she was born on March 1, 1752,[7] and another source referenced in the "Shoebox Letters" (a genealogist who had done some research for a family member) just estimated that she was probably born in 1751 or 1752.[8] Based on her parent's date of marriage (1749)[9] and the estimated date of birth of her first-born child (1768-1770), Catherine's expected date of birth would probably be sometime in 1750-1752. Based on the order of a list of her father's children in a petition by her brother Jacob in 1783,[10] however, it is likely that she was the second-born daughter, thus suggesting that her sister Ann was born in 1750, while Catherine was born in 1752.

The "Shoebox Letters" and other secondary sources show Catherine's place of birth as somewhere in Berks County, which is certainly reasonable, based on records that show that she and her first husband lived there and on her presumed parents place of residency.

First Marriage and Children

No records have been found of the marriage of Catherine and William Dehart or the births of their children. From the guardianship petitions after William's death, it is clear that Catherine and William had three children, William, Ann and Sarah, who were all under the age of 14 in 1780 and thus born after 1766.[11]

In February 1784, Ann Dehart filed a petition for Judah Boone to be her guardian, stating that she was a minor above the age of 14,[12] which means that she was born sometime between 1763 and 1770. In March 1787, an filed a new petition under the name of Anna Kerlin, stating that she had married Thomas Kerlin and wanted to have her guardianship changed to her husband. This indicates that Ann/Anna was not yet 21 and was born sometime between 1767 and 1770.[13]

In April 1787, Sarah Dehart filed a petition for John Kerling to be her guardian,[14] thus indicating that Sarah had reached the age of 14 by that date and thus born before April 1773, but presumably after her sister Ann.

In July 1789, William Dehart, Jr. filed a petition for Isaac Boone to be his guardian, stating that he was now 14 years old or older,[15] thus indicating that William was born before July 1775, but presumably, after his sister Sarah.

Based on the estimated dates of birth of his children, Catherine probably married William Dehart sometime in 1766 and 1769. However, fact that the tax records referenced in William's profile indicate he did not turn 21 and inherit his share of his father's estate until 1768 and fact that Catherine was probably not born until 1752, makes 1769 most probable for the year of their marriage. There were probably married in either Amity, where William lived, or Exeter, Berks County, where Catherine probably lived.

Based on the above-referenced guardianship petitions and estimated date of Catherine and William's marriage, Catherine and William had the following children, all presumably in Amity:

  1. Ann/Anna, b. sometime 1769-1770, m. about 1786-1787 Thomas Kerlin
  2. Sarah, b. sometime in 1771-1773
  3. William, b. sometime in 1773-1775

Many family trees provide more specific dates for their births, but no reliable sources supporting those specific dates have been found.

Based on a record showing that Catherine and her presumed uncles Isaac Boone and Hugh Boone were appointed as administrators of William Dehart's estate on August 23, 1777, Catherine's first husband, William Dehart, probably died shortly before that date.[16]

Second Marriage and Children

Catherine married James Ingels promptly after the death of her first husband. In fact, their marriage record states that they were married on August 23, 1777, the same day that Catherine was appointed as administrator of her first husband's estate.[17]

Catherine and James had the following children:.[18][3]

  1. Joseph Ingels b. March 15, 1778, m. Mary Boone Bryan, d. March 23, 1849
  2. James H. Ingels b. November 3, 1779 at Grants Fort, m. 1st October 24, 1799 Elizabeth Ducker, m. 2d June 8, 1823 Polly Field, d. April 13, 1857
  3. Elizabeth Ingels b. July 23, 1781, m. Robert Elliot, d. October 28, 1822
  4. Edith Ingels b. October 3, 1785, m. Wilson Hunt, d. March 30, 1857 at Callaway County, Missouri
  5. Boone Ingels b. April 15, 1785 at Grants Station, Kentucky, m. November 3, 1808 Elizabeth Reid at Paris, Kentucky, d. November 7, 1837 at Paris, Kentucky
  6. Eleanor (Nellie) Ingels b. September 17, 1787, m. September 5, 1805 William Victor, d. September 7, 1863
  7. Thomas Ingels b. April 20, 1789 Pennsylvania, m. Judith Haley, d. 1858
  8. John Ingels b. May 30, 1793, m. November 12, 1818 Rosey Gaar in Wayne County, Indiana, d. March 1, 1859 in Indiana

Move to Kentucky

Around 1782, the family moved from Pennsylvania to a farm in Grant's Station (which no longer exists) between Lexington and Paris in Bourbon County, Kentucky..[18] Several of the Ingels' children were born there.

Death and Burial

Catherine (Boone) Ingels died November 7, 1804 at the age of 52 years.[18][3] She and her husband, James, were buried on their farm in Grant's Station..[18] According to the "Shoebox Letters," their markers were torn up in the 1920s after the farm was sold, but there is a memorial to James and his wife set up across the road by the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) with pieces of the original stones from their house.[18]
