  • The Liber Historiæ Francorum names in Latin "Gundeveus rex Burgundionum…ex genere Athanaric regis" and his four sons "Gundobadus, Godeghiselus, Chilpricus et Godmarus". [1]

He is given the surname "Burgunden" because he was king of the Burgundians, one of the mobile Germanic ethnic groups in this period, rather than the ruler of a particular territory.

443 Birth and Parents

Godegisel, King of the Burgundians in Vienne & Geneva was born about 443. [2] Godegisel's father was Gundioc [3]

Gregory of Tours names (in order) "Gundobad, Godegisel, Chilperic and Gundomar" as the four sons of Gundioc King of the Burgunds, recording that Gundobad murdered his brother Godogisel. [1]

The German language Wikipedia reports that the Under King Godegisel from Geneva ( * 443 , † 501 ) was a son of King Gundi Ochs .[4]

Godegisel was the educator and uncle of Chrodechild , the wife of Clovis I, and since 463 Under King in Burgundy. [4]

473 Reign

Godegisel succeeded his father in 473 as Godegisel, King of Burgundy, based at Besançon. Gregory of Tours records that Godegisel ruled jointly with his brother Gundobad "over the territory round the Rhône and the Saône and the province of Marseille", but defected to support Clovis King of the Franks when the latter attacked Burgundy, and afterwards established himself as ruler at Vienne. [1]

He tried to be and to eliminate his brother Gundobad through an agreement with Clovis , ruler of all Burgundy . Gundobad had previously , after the assassination of the third brother Chilperic II . [4]

Clovis went under promise of annual tributes and a territorial concessions on this trade and in 500 they defeated Gundobad in Dijon . However Gundobad escaped to Avignon and 501 probably reclaim the areas with Visigoth help . He murdered then Godegisel in Vienne and replaced him with his son Sigismund . [4]

500 Death

He was killed when his brother attacked Vienne. The Marii Episcopi Aventicensis Chronica records that "Godegaselo" conspired against "fratrem suum Gundobagaudum" in 500. [1]

Gregory of Tours records that Godegisel (d. 500), King of Burgundy at Besançon, was murdered by his brother Gundobad, when Vienne was attacked. [1]

Godegisel died about 501. [2]
