Biography

Joshua, son of Israel and Sarah (Bartlett) Bradford, was born in Plymouth on June 23, 1710 and died in Friendship, MA (now ME) on May 22, 1758 (killed by Indians).

Joshua married Hannah Bradford, daughter of Elisha and Bathesheba (Brock) Bradford, on February 17, 1736 in Kingston. Bathsheba was born in Plymouth on April 10, 1720 and she was also killed by Indians on May 22, 1758 in Friendship. Joshua and Hannah Bradford were second cousins, both great-grandchildren of Gov. William Bradford.

"A letter of the same date (22 May 1758) from 'St George's at the Eastward' was printed in the Boston News-Letter of June first: 'This Day at Two o'Clock a whaleboat came up from Meduncock, with the melancholy News of the Indians falling upon the Inhabitants there this Morning half an Hour after Sunrise; killed and scalped Mr Bradford, his Wife and Mr. Mill's Wife and kill'd her Children: two of Bradford's Boys [Joshua and Benjamin] they carried off Prisoners; wounded one of his Daughters and a Boy of Mill's dangerously: The People hearing the Indians yell got out and prevented their killing any more: One child in the House escaped by crawling Under a Bed'...The two boys came back after the peace" (New England Captives, 2:283).

Joshua is buried at Garrison Island Cemetery, East Friendship, Knox, ME (Garrison Island is a tidal island that is connected to the mainland at the tip of Bradford Point, Friendship, ME at low tide. The cemetery is at the northern tip of the island and is enclosed by an old stone wall and the shoreline).

Joshua Bradford's profile is noted here that he died in "Friendship, York, Massachusetts Bay Colony." He died in Meduncook (now Friendship), Lincoln County (now Knox County), Massachusetts (now Maine). [Maine was administered as a province of Massachusetts until March 15, 1820 when it became a state as part of the Missouri Compromise.] Hannah Bradford (Profile 2224), Joshua's wife, does list the location of her death correctly as "Died in Friendship, MA (now ME)". They were killed by Indians same day, same location. His location of death should match hers.
