Jane Brann is an example of a woman who lived her whole life in a small world, never moving more than 5 km. from her birthplace. She lived in a agricultural area at a time when most people were moving into cities for better work prospects and the hope of better living conditions. Her grandchildren though moved to many different different parts of England, and in fact lived on three different continents.
She was baptised on 16 May 1815 in Wittersham, Kent. Father's Name: Thomas Brann, Mother's Name: Ann Brann.[1][2]
In 1841 the couple was living at Dobles, Wittersham (in between Moons Green and Hunts Hill) together with their first three children Mary age 4, George age 2 and 8 months old Lucy. Also living with the family was 20 year old William Brann, Jane's brother, both of them were employed as agricultural labourers.[4]
The family lived at the same address in 1851 with the addition of five more children, Ann age 8, Richard age 6, Jane age 4, Thomas age 2 and Harriett Kitty who was 8 months old. William is no longer with the family but Richard is still an agricultural labourer.[5]
By 1861 the family had moved to the house next door, Hunts Hill. The older children Mary, George, Lucy, Ann, Richard and Jane had all left home by this time but three more children had been born, Elizabeth aged 8, Lucy age 6 and Eliza age 4. [6]
In 1871 the couple, with their youngest daughter were living at 3 Back Street, Wittersham a few doors away from where they had lived previously. Back Street is now called Swan Street. There is a William Sims living at 5 Back Street, possibly a relative, Richard now aged 57 is still an agricultural labourer.[7]
Jane's husband Richard died in 1875 and in 1881 she is found living at 5 Back Street, Wittersham with her son Richard, also an agricultural labourer, his wife and three children.[8]
There is a claim that in 1891 Jane was living with her brother Henry Brann at No. 6 Back Street (from census), but all records show a different family at that address and there is no mention of Jane to be found.
