Biography

Dorothy Brereton was born about 1563 (estimated: probate 1623 - lifespan of 60 yrs = dob of 1563).[1]

She was the daughter of Urian Brereton and his wife, Alice Tafford.[2]

Dorothy was the sister of Urian Brereton and Lady Mary Barlow; the aunt of William Brereton of Honford, esq., and the cousin of Elizabeth Leycester of Tabley.[1]

Dorothy married George Reddish, gent[2], the fourth son of Otes Reddish, of Reddish, esq, and Alice, daughter of Ralph Prestwich of Hulme, esq.[3]

They had children:

  1. Grace Reddishe, baptised on 5 November, 1580 at the Cathedral Church of Manchester;[4]
  2. Otes Redish,[1] Othes was baptised on 7 October, 1581, at the Cathedral Church of Manchester;[5]
  3. Edward Reddishe, baptised on 24 May, 1584, at the Cathedral Church of Manchester,[6] Edward Redish had children;[1]
  4. Margaret;[1]
  5. Jane married Thomas Piggott and had children;[1]
  6. Alice Reddishe, baptised on 2 January, 1582 [now 1583], at the Cathedral Church of Manchester,[7] was married to John Porter, and had a daughter Alice;
  7. William Reddishe,[3] baptised on 25 April, 1585, at the Cathedral Church of Manchester.[8]
  8. Margery Reddishe, buried on 22 April, 1576, at the Cathedral Church of Manchester.[9]

Son Edward is mentioned in his mother's will[1] but not his father's,[3] and son William is mentioned in his father's will but not his mother's.

Dorothy had another grandchild, Margaret Hardman, (so her daughter Margaret was probably married to a Hardman, although no longer living when her mother made her will). Dorothy also had a daughter-in-law, Mary Redish,[1] perhaps the wife of Otes or Willaim?

Dorothy's husband, George, made his will on 16 December, 1587, in co Lancaster. At the time, he was leasing a house in Manchester, where he died, as he was buried at the Collegiate Church of Manchester on 27 December, 1587.[3] In his will, proved 29 October, 1588, he left his property to his wife Dorothy for her life, and then to his two sons, Otes and William. He also mentions his nephew James Clayton. George makes Dorothy and her brother, William Bruereton of Handford, esq, his executors. Unfortunately for Dorothy and her children, George left debts due of around 300 pounds and his inventory amounted to only 123 pounds.[3]

On 28 December, 17 James [1619], Dorothy Redish, widow of George Redish of Redish, gent, made her will.[1] It appears she had continued to live in Manchester, as she was also buried at the Collegiate Church of Manchester on 20th January, 1623.[3] Her will proved 1623.[1]
