Biography

Jonathan Brewster was the son of Wrestling and Mary (____) Brewster, probably born in Duxbury before September 1685.[1]

He married his step-sister, Mary Partridge on 06 March 1709/10 in Duxbury. She was the daughter of John and Hannah (Seabury) Partridge, born 02 May 1693 in Duxbury and died on 09 September 1743, buried in the Old Scotland Cemetery in Scotland, Connecticut. [1]

Jonathan died on 24 November 1753 in Windham, Connecticut, and was also buried in Old Scotland Cemetery.[1][2][3][4]

In his will signed 14 March 1748 and proved 24 January 1754, Jonathan Brewster of Windham did not mention his wife. He named his eldest son James; sons Peleg, Jonah and Elijah who were all under 21; eldest daughter Hannah Barker; daughters Mary Bingham, Jerusha Rudd and Sarah Holmes. A distribution made on 22 August 1754 had receipts from Peleg Brewster (8 May 1750, 10 Mar 1754, 25 Oct 1754, 23 Dec 1754), Jonah (25 Oct 1754), and Elijah (12 Dec 1754). Elijah gave a receipt to his brother James for part of what his father left him on 12 Dec 1754.[5]

The children of Jonathan and Mary (Partridge) Brewster were probably born in Duxbury (#1-7) an Windham, Connecticut (#8-9): [1]

  1. Hannah Brewster, b. ca. 1711; mar. John Barker.
  2. Mary Brewster, b. ca. 1712; mar. (1) Reuben Lillie, (2) Jeremiah Bingham.
  3. James Brewster, b. ca. May 1715; mar. Faith Ripley.
  4. Peleg Brewster, b. ca. 07 Feb 1717; mar. Sarah Smith.
  5. Jerusha Brewster, b. ca. 06 Mar 1719; mar. Zebulon Rudd.
  6. Jonah Brewster, mar. Joanna Waldo.
  7. Sarah Brewster, mar. Jehosophat Holmes.
  8. Elijah Brewster, b. 12 Mar 1731; d. bet. 24 Apr 1755 and 14 Jul 1755 (dates will written & proved).
  9. Jonathan Brewster, b. 05 May 1737; not in father's will.

Also, probably:

  • Mary Brewster, mar. William Kempton . The 2014 Brewster Silver Book lists the possibility that Mary (Brewster) Kempton was the daughter of Jonathan Brewster and Eleanor Keene. [6] The 2019 Brewster Silver Book indicates that Mary (Brewster) Kempton is "probably" the daughter of Jonathan Brewster and Eleanor Keene.[7]

Additional relationship

Jonathan Brewster was the paternal fifth great grandfather of Mamie (Doud) Eisenhower, First Lady of the United States, who was married to Dwight Eisenhower the 34th President of the United States.

Brewster-3207 and Brewster-200 appear to represent the same person because: same son Peleg

Brewster-1317 and Brewster-200 appear to represent the same person because: Either these are the same, or one has an incorrect daughter Hannah who married Barker.
