Biography

The parents and origins of Joane Bridger are unknown. She may be a daughter of a William Bridger of Dorking, Surrey; however there are not enough records to link them with any certainty. Her birth year is estimated by Caleb Johnson to be about 1548.[1]

Joane married John Mullyn (aka Mullins) on 8 July 1571 at Dorking, Surrey.[1][2][3]

The Dorking parish registers have a large break between the years 1572 and 1578, during which John and Joan would have had children.[1] However, Mayflower researcher Caleb Johnson confidently lists the following as children of the couple:

  • William, born in Dorking about 1672, died at Plymouth 21 February 1620/1; married Alice ____ and had 5 children[1]
  • John, born ca. 1575, married and had children[1]
  • Margaret, born ca. 1580, buried 5 August 1611 at Dorking, married John Gardiner and had a son[1]
  • Edward, baptized 23 September 1582 in Dorking;[4] "the son of widow Mullins" was buried at Dorking on 8 July 1584 (presumed to be Edward)[1]

Joan remarried to Vincent Benham on 1 November 1585 in Dorking.[1] They had a daughter:

  • Elizabeth, baptized 11 December 1586, married Nathaniel Mountford[1]

The widow Joan Benham was buried at Dorking on 5 February 1608/9. Her husband was buried there on 12 June 1604.[1]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents

Unsourced parents, Richard Bridger and Margerie Elliot were detached as Joan's parents as there is not enought evidence to connect them. Additionally, the probate record of Richard Bridger of East Betchworth, Surrey mentions no daughters.[1]

Bridger-55 and Bridger-19 appear to represent the same person because: Same name and spouse. Bridger-55 is an orphaned profile created by a gedcom upload, so I'm thinking the fact that the birth and death dates don't line up isn't necessarily a reason not to merge these two together. As the profile mangers, I'm sure you know more : )
I think her name should be Bridger, not Bridgrer
