John Brooke, second son of Hugh Brooke, was a "person of considerable position." He was serjeant-at-law to Henry VIII, and Justice of Assize for the western part of England. He held the office of Chief Steward to the Monastery of Grlastonbury.
Before 1479[1] he married Johanna Americk, only daughter of Richard Americk (or Amerike),of Ashton -Phillips in Long Ashton, Somerset (near Bristol). He acquired part of the manor of Long Ashton. He died 25th Dec., 1522, and was buried, together with his wife, on the north side of the chancel of Redcliffe Church in Bristol.
They had three sons - Thomas, eldest and heir, - Arthur, - David (About 1497 - 1559) member of Parliament for Bristol several time between 1529 and 1543
and one daughter - Lucia, who married Nicholas Tooze, son and heir of John Tooze of Taunton, and his wife Johanna, daughter of John Combes.
Anne Spert can not be the mother of this profile as Anne Spert was born after 1500,and probably after 1510. Please see the research notes on Anne Spert's profile. Therefore I plan to remove Anne Spert as the mother.Gunn-471
Furthermore, his purported father, Thomas Brooke, seem to be spurious, based on a misinterpretation of the Gloucestershire Visitation (for Spert) and a statement made by a 19th century vicar, that John's father was Thomas Brooke. See the G-G on "Parentage of John Brooke" for details. The Visitation for Somerset has John as son of Hugh Brooke.
