Biography

Esther Brooks was born at Concord, Massachusetts on July 4, 1668, daughter of Deacon Joshua and Hannah (Mason) Brooks. [1] [2][3] [4]

She married Benjamin Whittemore on August 17, 1692 at Concord, Massachusetts [1] Benjamin was born at Charlestown, Massachusetts on September 6, 1669, son of John and Mary (Upham) Whittemore. [5][2] [3] [6] [4] [7]

After their marriage they resided at Concord for the remainder of their lives. In March 1692 Benjamin bought a house and lot with 4 1/2 acres and 15 acres of upland in Concord from Moses Whitney, and on Feb. 20, 1694, Benjamin bought 8 acres meadowland in Concord from Francis Fletcher. [2]

Benjamin was a weaver by trade, a yeoman, carrying out agriculture as well. His hard work made him one of the wealthiest early Whittemores, leaving an estate in 1734 valued nearing L1700. [2] [3]

Benjamin died September 8, 1734 at Concord. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Administration of his estate was granted to widow Esther on September 30, 1734. Distribution of the estate in 1743 [Middlesex Probate: 24776: Vol. 20: p. 283] went to:

  • heirs of his son Benjamin, then deceased
  • sons Nathaniel and Aaron
  • daughter Mehitable Whittemore
  • daughter Mary Farr, wife of John
  • daughter Grace Wood, wife of Joseph. [2] [8]

Widow Esther Whittemore died at Concord on September 16, 1742. [1] [2][3] [4]

Her estate was administered by her son Nathaniel. The inventory was taken on February 9, 1742/3 and submitted for approval on April 11, 1743. [9]
