Biography

Hugh Brooks was born at Concord, Massachusetts on January 1, 1677, son of Deacon Joshua and Hannah (Mason) Brooks. [1] [2] [3] [4]

  • 1697: His brother Noah was appointed guardian to Hugh, a minor, aged about 19 years. [2] [5]
  • 1697: August 24: Noah, Daniel and Joseph Brooks, Benjamin Pierce, Benjamin Whittemore and Judah Potter, Hugh's brothers and brothers-in-law, sold to Hugh by deed, all that part of Joshua Brooks estate that had previously been deeded to brother Job Brooks, deceased. [1]
  • 1730-33: Served as selectman [6]
  • 1735: May: When petitions were presented to the General Court, to have parts of Lexington, Weston and Concord set off for the new town of Lincoln, Hugh was one of those not in favor of the petition. [7]

He married Abigail Barker on April 9, 1701. [2] She was born at Concord on May 19, 1682, daughter of John/ Jonathan and Judith (Simonds) Barker. [3] [4]

John Barker, Sr. wrote his will on March 14, 1711, which was allowed on April 21, 1718. The children of John Barker, deceased submitted to the court on April 3, 1718, that they desired the will presented to the court be allowed. Hugh Brookes was one of the petitioners. [8]

Hugh died on January 18, 1746. [3] [2] [4] He is buried in the Old Hill Burying Ground at Concord. His inscription reads: Here lyes Buried the Body of Lieut. HUGH BROOKS Who Departed this Life Janry 18 Anno Domni 1747 in ye 70 Year of His Age [9]

His widow Abigail died on September 1, 1761. [3]

Widow Abigail Brooks wrote her will on July 26, 1753. In it she left bequests to: [10]

  • Thomas, Francis and Abigail Fletcher, the three children of Abigail, after her decease

  • daughter Mary Hapgood
