Biography

Mary (Brooks) York was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.

Mary Elizabeth Brooks was born on August 8, 1866 in Pall Mall, Fentress, Tennessee, United States, daughter of William Harrison (~1831–1867) and Nancy Pile (1835–1919).

Mary married William Uriah York (born on May 15, 1863 in Jamestown, Fentress; son of Uriah M. York and Elizabeth Jane (Livingston) York).

In the 1880 census Mary (age 14) was the daughter of Nancy Brooks in District 8, Grainger, Tennessee, United States.[1] Nancy Brooks 35, daughter Mary Brooks 14, son William Brooks 12, sister Mary Pile 4, other Nancy McGinnis 36, nephew Robert Pile 7.

In the 1900 census Mary (age 35) was the wife of William York in Fentress, Tennessee, United States.[2] William York 37, wife Mary E York 35, son Henry York 18, son Joseph York 15, son Alvin York 13, son John S York 9, son Albert York 5, daughter Hattie York 4, son George A York 2.

In the 1910 census Mary (age 43) was the wife of William York in Civil District 2, Fentress, Tennessee, United States.[3] William York 46, wife Mary York 43, son Alvin York 23, son Samuel York 19, son Albert York 17, daughter Hattie York 14, son George York 11, son James York 9, daughter Lilly York 6, son Robbert York 4, daughter Lucy York 0.

In the 1920 census Mary (age 53) was the widowed head of household in Civil District 2, Fentress, Tennessee, United States.[4] Mrs Mary York 53 years, son George York 21 years, son James York 18 years, daughter Lillie York 16 years, son Robert York 13 years, daughter Lucy York 9 years.

In the 1930 census Mary (age 63) was the widowed mother of Alvin C York in District 2, Fentress, Tennessee, United States.[5] Alvin C York 42, wife Gracie M York 30, son Alvin C York Jr. 9, son George E B York 6, son Woodroe W York 4, mother Mary York 63, servant Alvie Hatfield 24.

In the 1940 census Mary (age 73) was the widowed mother of Alvin C York in Civil District 2, Fentress, Tennessee, United States.[6] Alvin C York 52, wife Grace L York 40, son George E B York 16, son Woodrow W York 14, son Andrew J York 10, daughter Betsy R York 7, daughter Mary A York 4, son Thomas J York 2, mother Mary York 73, sister-in-law M Kansas Williams 57, cook Mertie A Rains 25, nephew Dixie York 22.

Mary died on May 21, 1943 in Pall Mall, aged 76. She was buried in Wolf River Cemetery, Pall Mall, Tennessee.[7][8]
