Biography

King Robert I de Brus "The Bruce" had several illegitimate sons and daughters whose names appear in the records. Elizabeth is one of them. She is given as marrying Sir Walter Oliphant of Gask.[1] Anderson states she was King Robert's youngest daughter.[2]

That she was married before 1364 (possibly some years before) is set forth in charters confirmed by the Crown on 11th January that year to Sir Walter Oliphant and his spouse Lady Elizabeth Bruce.[3][4] Dalrymple's Annals cites a charter in the custody of Oliphant of Gask, bearing the date 11 January 1364, whereby King David erects the lands of Gask into a baony "...Dilecto et fideli sui Waltero Olyfant et Elisabethæ sponsae suæ, dilecttae sorori nostrae." [5] That regrants were made to Sir Walter without Elizabeth, in 1378, may indicate his wife's death before this date.

The error of her legitimacy needs to corrected. Clearly by the charter, David II repeated addressed her as "our beloved sister". Sad Dalrymple never corrected his mistake when it was proven and left history to keep repeating his error.

This birth date is questionable as it makes her almost twice as old as her husband (possible, but unlikely). It needs to be documented with a reliable source. Unsourced family trees are not reliable sources.
